Key concepts

Las profesionesJobs: médico/médica (doctor), profesor/profesora, ingeniero/ingeniera, abogado/abogada (lawyer), enfermero/enfermera (nurse).
Future tenseSimple future for plans: 'Trabajaré...' (I will work). Add endings to infinitive: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án.
Conditional ambitions'Me gustaría ser...' (I would like to be...), 'Quisiera estudiar...' (I would like to study...).
Universidad y formaciónUniversity vocab: la universidad, hacer una carrera (do a degree), las prácticas (work experience).
El trabajoWorkplace: el sueldo (salary), el jefe (boss), una entrevista (interview), un contrato.
Reasons + adjectivesJustifying choices: 'porque soy creativo/responsable/trabajador'. Useful for personal statements.
las matemáticasMaths — always plural in Spanish.
el inglésEnglish (the subject).
el españolSpanish (the subject).
la historiaHistory.
la geografíaGeography.
el arteArt.
me gustaI like (one thing) — use with singular subject.
no me gustaI don't like — negative form.

Common mistakes to avoid

Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:

Can you translate English into Spanish word-for-word?✗ Yes, it always works word-for-word.   ✓ No — word order and structures differ (adjectives usually follow the noun).
Do Spanish adjectives change form?✗ No, Spanish adjectives never change.   ✓ Yes — they agree with the noun's gender and number (rojo/roja/rojos/rojas).
