Key concepts

El tiempo libreFree-time vocab: escuchar música (listen to music), ver la tele (watch TV), salir con amigos (go out with friends).
Me gusta / Me gustanLikes: me gusta + singular noun or infinitive, me gustan + plural: Me gustan las películas de acción.
La músicaMusic vocab: el/la cantante (singer), la canción (song), el grupo (band), el concierto (concert).
El cine y la teleScreen vocab: una película de terror (horror film), las noticias (the news), una serie (a series), la pantalla (screen).
Las fiestasFestivals: la Nochevieja (New Year's Eve) with las uvas de la suerte (lucky grapes), los Reyes Magos (Three Kings, 6 January).
Los famososCelebrity culture: famoso/a (famous), la fama (fame), una estrella (a star), las redes sociales (social media).
La familiaFamily vocab: los padres (parents), los hermanos (siblings), los abuelos (grandparents), los primos (cousins).
Las relacionesRelationships: 'Me llevo bien con...' (I get on well with...), 'Discuto con...' (I argue with...).
Verbos reflexivosReflexive verbs use pronouns me/te/se/nos/os/se: llevarse bien, pelearse (fight), casarse (get married).
Ser vs EstarTwo verbs for 'to be': ser (permanent: 'Soy alta'), estar (temporary/location: 'Estoy cansado').
Adjective agreementAdjectives agree in gender and number: simpático/simpática/simpáticos/simpáticas, joven/jóvenes.
Tú vs ustedtú = informal singular (friends/family), usted = formal (strangers/teachers). 'Usted' uses 3rd person verb.
PasatiemposHobbies: el deporte, la música, leer (reading), los videojuegos, ver la tele, salir con amigos.
Jugar a'Jugar a' for sports/games: jugar al fútbol, jugar al tenis. Note 'a' + el = 'al'.

Common mistakes to avoid

Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:

Do 'ser' and 'estar' mean the same and swap freely?✗ Yes, they are interchangeable.   ✓ No — ser is for permanent/identity, estar for states and location.
Do Spanish adjectives change form?✗ No, Spanish adjectives never change.   ✓ Yes — they agree with the noun's gender and number (rojo/roja/rojos/rojas).
