Evidence and margins

Evidence for plate tectonics includes the jigsaw fit of continents, matching fossils and rock sequences, palaeomagnetic striping of the ocean floor, and sea-floor spreading. Plates move over the asthenosphere, driven by convection, ridge push and slab pull.

Four margin types:

  • Constructive - plates diverge; new crust forms (ocean ridges, rift valleys).
  • Destructive - oceanic plate subducts beneath continental (deep-sea trenches, island arcs, fold mountains, explosive volcanoes).
  • Conservative - plates slide past each other; earthquakes but no volcanoes.
  • Collision - two continental plates converge, buckling into fold mountains.

Volcanic activity

Hazards, benefits and management

Volcanic activity occurs at constructive and destructive margins and at intra-plate hot spots. Its outcomes are both hazards (lava, pyroclastic flows, lahars, ash, gases) and benefits (fertile soils, geothermal energy, tourism, minerals).

CCEA requires a small-scale case study of volcanic activity (for example Pinatubo in 1991 or Montserrat from 1995) to evaluate how a country prepares for and responds to an eruption - monitoring, hazard mapping, evacuation and land-use planning.

Keep it honest: evaluate preparation and response qualitatively; do not invent casualty or cost figures.

Seismic activity

Waves, prediction and response

Earthquakes release energy as seismic waves: P (primary) waves are fastest and compressional; S (secondary) waves are slower shear waves that cannot pass through liquids; L (surface/Love) waves travel along the surface and cause the most damage. Secondary hazards include seismic shaking, liquefaction and tsunamis.

Prediction attempts include seismic gap theory and dilation. CCEA requires a small-scale case study of seismic activity (for example Tohoku in 2011) to evaluate preparation and response - building design, early-warning systems, drills and emergency planning.
