Settlement

This mini-lesson covers AS 2 Theme 2 β€” Settlement: the rural–urban continuum and change at the rural–urban fringe, planning in rural environments (protected areas), and urban challenges in both MEDC inner cities and LEDC cities.

Settlement change

The rural–urban continuum and fringe

Settlement is best seen as a rural–urban continuum rather than a sharp town/country divide. Change concentrates at the rural–urban fringe:

  • Greenfield developments β€” building on previously undeveloped land at the edge.
  • Suburbanisation β€” outward growth of housing into the suburbs.
  • Counterurbanisation β€” movement of people from cities to smaller towns and villages beyond the fringe.

?Families leave a city entirely to live in commuter villages in the surrounding countryside. This is:
Calculate

Calculate β€” nearest neighbour

1In a settlement study, n = 32 settlements over an area A = 128 kmΒ², with a mean nearest-neighbour distance of 1.0 km. Using Rn = 2 Γ— d Γ— √(n Γ· A), calculate the nearest-neighbour index Rn.
Rn
Hint: n Γ· A = 32 Γ· 128 = 0.25; √0.25 = 0.5; Rn = 2 Γ— 1.0 Γ— 0.5.
Planning in rural environments

Protecting the countryside

Planning protects valued countryside. CCEA names three designations:

  • ASSIs / SSSIs β€” Areas/Sites of Special Scientific Interest, protecting habitats and geology.
  • AONBs β€” Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, protecting landscape quality.
  • National Parks β€” large protected areas balancing conservation and recreation.

You must be able to evaluate the arguments for and against establishing a National Park in Northern Ireland β€” weighing conservation and tourism against restrictions on farming and development.

Urban challenges

MEDC inner city and LEDC city

MEDC inner city: issues of economic and social deprivation, followed by re-urbanisation and gentrification as investment returns (case study, for example Belfast).

LEDC city: rapid growth brings informal settlements (shanty towns), poor service provision, and a large informal economy (case study, for example Nairobi).

Keep it honest: use the character of your chosen cities qualitatively; do not fabricate population or slum-size statistics.
