Cultural geography

Cultural groups and inequality

Cultural geography studies how identity and meaning vary across space, despite globalisation.

  • Cultural groups exist through shared language, religion, ethnicity and values; strong shared identity can produce cultural nationalism.
  • Social inequalities - social exclusion and discrimination - operate by ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexuality and social class.
  • Social constructions of nature and landscape - landscapes are read as human systems, both natural and cultural.

Migration

Push, pull and impacts

Migration is driven by push and pull factors - economic, social, political, cultural and environmental - together with barriers to movement.

  • Voluntary migration (for work, quality of life) vs forced migration (conflict, persecution, disaster).
  • Impacts on service provision, economic activity and social stability at both origin and destination.
  • Immigration - documented and undocumented - is a political issue, prompting government responses.

CCEA uses case studies such as out-migration (for example Achill Island) and in-migration (for example Delhi), treated qualitatively.

1In a district, 20% of residents belong to cultural group X; nationally the figure is 10%. Calculate the location quotient (local proportion รท national proportion).
LQ
Hint: LQ = 0.20 รท 0.10. A value above 1 means the group is over-represented locally.

Geographies of cyberspace

Cyberspace and global contrasts

The growth of cyberspace has transformed socio-economic activity and helped produce shared international cultures - remote working, e-commerce, global media and social networks.

Yet global contrasts remain: a digital divide shaped by economic, social and political factors means access and influence are highly uneven between and within countries.
