Key concepts
UrlaubszieleHoliday destinations: ans Meer (to the sea), in die Berge (to the mountains), ins Ausland (abroad).
VerkehrsmittelTransport: mit dem Auto, mit dem Zug, mit dem Flugzeug, mit dem Bus, zu Fuß (on foot).
UnterkunftAccommodation: das Hotel, die Jugendherberge (youth hostel), das Ferienhaus, der Campingplatz.
Dative prepositionsmit, nach, von, zu, aus, bei, seit + dative. 'Ich fahre mit dem Zug' (dem = dative of der).
Future with werdenwerden + infinitive (at end): 'Ich werde nach Spanien fahren' (I will go to Spain).
Imperfect with war/hatte'Es war toll' (It was great), 'Wir hatten Spaß' (We had fun). Common past forms in writing.

ich bin gefahrenI travelled / went — sein + gefahren (movement).

Common mistakes to avoid
Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:
How many genders do German nouns have?✗ Two, like French and Spanish. ✓ Three — masculine, feminine and neuter (der, die, das).
Do German nouns and articles change in different roles?✗ No, they never change. ✓ Yes — German uses cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive).
Can you always guess a German noun's gender from its meaning?✗ Yes, meaning always tells you the gender. ✓ No — gender is often grammatical (das Mädchen, 'girl', is neuter).
