Key concepts

eins, zwei, dreiOne, two, three — the start of counting 1 to 20.

MontagMonday — first weekday; days start with capitals in German.

JanuarJanuary — months are also capitalised in German.

rotRed — colour adjective, no capital letter.

blauBlue — common GCSE colour adjective.

schwarzBlack — note the 'sch' sound and ending -z.

gutGood — also used to say 'well' (Mir geht es gut).

großBig or tall — opposite of klein.

kleinSmall or short — common GCSE descriptor.

schönBeautiful or nice — useful for places and people.

hässlichUgly — opposite of schön; useful contrast adjective.

altOld — also 'years old' with Ich bin. Jahre alt.

einundzwanzigTwenty-one — pattern: digit + und + tens.

hundertHundred — einhundert or just hundert.

Common mistakes to avoid

Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:

How many genders do German nouns have?✗ Two, like French and Spanish. ✓ Three — masculine, feminine and neuter (der, die, das).

Is German word order the same as English?✗ Yes, exactly like English. ✓ No — the verb is usually second in main clauses and last in subordinate clauses.
