The French Revolution began in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille (14 July 1789), overthrowing the monarchy. Its radical Reign of Terror (1793-1794) gave way to Napoleon, whose empire ended at the Battle of Waterloo (1815).
Nationalism reshaped 19th-century Europe. Italy was unified by 1861, and Germany was unified under Otto von Bismarck in 1871 following wars of unification and his practice of Realpolitik.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 β the February collapse of the Tsar and the October Bolshevik seizure of power led by Lenin β created the worldβs first communist state and, in time, the Soviet Union.
