The Meiji Restoration (1868) transformed Japan from feudal isolation into a modern industrial and military power. Victory in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) made Japan the first Asian state to defeat a European great power in modern times.
The Chinese Republic was proclaimed in 1912 after the fall of the Qing. The Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921; after the Long March (1934-1935) and civil war, Mao proclaimed the People’s Republic of China on 1 October 1949.
