The mood of the unreal

Use Konjunktiv II for situations that are hypothetical, contrary to fact, or politely tentative:

• Hypothesis: Ich würde nach Japan reisen. — I would travel to Japan.
• Contrary to fact: Wenn ich reich wäre… — if I were rich (but I am not).
• Politeness: Könnten Sie mir helfen? — could you help me?

Two ways to build it: the analytic würde + infinitive (works for any verb) and the direct one-word KII (wäre, hätte, könnte) preferred for a core set of verbs.

The all-purpose conditional

würde is the KII of werden. Put it in position 2 and the infinitive at the end — this works for essentially every lexical verb:

Example: Ich würde gern nach Japan reisen. — I would like to travel to Japan.

Common verbs prefer a one-word KII, built from the Präteritum + umlaut + endings (-e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en):

Also common: sollte, dürfte, möchte (from mögen), käme, gäbe, ginge, fände. Use the direct KII for sein, haben, werden and the modals; use würde + infinitive for the rest.

Present unreal conditions

For a present hypothetical, put KII in both halves. The wenn-clause sends its verb to the end; the main clause is V2:

• Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. — if I had time, I would come.
• Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.
• Elegant option: replace würde with a direct KII — Wenn ich Zeit hätte, käme ich mit.

Avoid doubling: good style keeps at most one würde per sentence — use hätte/wäre in the wenn-clause, not *würde haben.

To say what would have happened (but did not), use the KII of haben/wäre + past participle — the past counterfactual:

• Ich hätte es gemacht. — I would have done it.
• Ich wäre gern gekommen. — I would have liked to come (motion → wäre).
• Full conditional: Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich nicht gekommen.

Auxiliary rule holds: the same verbs that take sein in the perfect take wäre here (wäre gekommen, wäre gefahren); the rest take hätte.

The tactful KII

KII softens requests and wishes — essential for the speaking exam:

• Könnten Sie mir helfen? — could you help me? (vs blunt Können Sie…)
• Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. — I would like a coffee.
• Ich möchte … (from mögen) — the standard polite "I would like".
• Würden Sie bitte die Tür schließen? — would you please…?

Watch the umlaut: könnten (KII, polite) vs konnten (plain past, "were able to") — one dot changes the meaning entirely.
