The passive
The passive shifts the focus from who does the action to what is done. German builds it with werden + past participle — across every tense — and distinguishes the process passive (an action happening) from the state passive (a resulting condition).
Man baut das Haus. → Das Haus wird gebaut.active → passive: the object becomes the subject; the doer fades

The werden-passive
werden + past participle
The core recipe: a conjugated werden in position 2, the past participle at the end. The accusative object of the active sentence becomes the nominative subject:
Active:Der Architekt baut das Haus.
Passive:Das Haus wird gebaut. — the house is (being) built.
This is the "process" passive (Vorgangspassiv): it describes the action in progress, not a finished state.
Quick check
The present passive
?Complete: Das Haus ___ gebaut. ("The house is being built.")
Across the tenses
wird · wurde · ist … worden
Only the form of werden changes; the participle stays put. Note the special perfect: werden becomes worden, not geworden:

Das Haus …
Präsens
wird gebaut
Präteritum
wurde gebaut
Perfekt
ist gebaut worden
Plusquamperfekt
war gebaut worden
Futur I
wird gebaut werden
The key marker: in the perfect and pluperfect passive, the participle of werden is worden (it drops the ge-). Never *ist gebaut geworden.

The perfect passive
?Complete: Das Haus ist gebaut ___. ("The house has been built.")

Your turn — the past passive
1Complete (Präteritum): Das Auto ___ repariert. ("The car was repaired." — auxiliary only.)
Hint: Präteritum of werden in the passive → one word.
Type it
Your turn — the perfect marker
2Complete: Der Brief ist geschrieben ___. ("The letter has been written.")
Hint: the passive participle of werden — notgeworden.
The agent
von + dative vs durch + accusative
If you name who or what did it, choose the right preposition:
von + Dativ — a person or deliberate doer (agent): Das Haus wird von einem Architekten gebaut.
durch + Akkusativ — an impersonal means or cause: Die Stadt wurde durch ein Erdbeben zerstört.
Rule of thumb:von = the doer, durch = the instrument/force. A letter is written von einem Autor; a town is destroyed durch ein Feuer.
Quick check
Naming the doer
?Complete: Das Buch wurde ___ einem Studenten geschrieben. ("…was written by a student.")
Quick check
Naming the cause
?Complete: Die Stadt wurde ___ ein Erdbeben zerstört. ("…was destroyed by an earthquake.")

Your turn — the agent phrase
3Translate the agent phrase "by an architect" (der Architekt — a weak noun) as it appears in a passive sentence.
Hint: personal doer → von + dative; Architekt is a weak noun (adds -en).

Complete the passive
The sein-passive
Zustandspassiv — the resulting state
Contrast the process (werden) with the state (sein) passive — the difference is action vs. condition:
Das Fenster wird geöffnet. — the window is being opened (process, happening now).
Das Fenster ist geöffnet. — the window is open (state, the result).
Das Geschäft ist geschlossen. — the shop is (already) closed.
Test: if you could add "now/already" and mean a finished condition, it is the sein-passive; if the action is unfolding, it is the werden-passive.
Quick check
Process or state?
?Complete for the state meaning: Das Geschäft ___ geschlossen. ("The shop is (already) closed.")
Modals & the passive
muss gebaut werden
With a modal, the passive infinitive Partizip II + werden goes to the end:
Das Haus muss gebaut werden. — the house must be built.
Das Problem kann gelöst werden. — the problem can be solved.
Dative stays dative: verbs like helfen keep their dative object even in the passive — Mir wird geholfen / Es wird mir geholfen (an impersonal passive with no nominative subject).
Type it
Your turn — build a present passive
4Translate "The house is being built" into German (bauen, das Haus).
Hint: wird in position 2, participle gebaut at the end.
Alternatives
man, sich lassen & sein + zu
German often avoids the passive with lighter constructions:
man (one/you/they): Man baut das Haus. = the house is being built.
sich lassen (= can be …-ed): Das lässt sich leicht machen. — that can easily be done.
sein + zu + infinitive (= must/can be …-ed): Das Problem ist schnell zu lösen.
Essay tip: alternating a true passive with man and sich lassen reads as more idiomatic than repeating wird … werden throughout.
Type it
Your turn — the man alternative
5Rewrite Das Auto wird repariert with man (active, same meaning).
Hint: man as subject + the active verb + the accusative object.
Sort it
von or durch?
Sort each agent by the preposition it needs in the passive.
Agens: von + Dativ
Mittel/Ursache: durch + Akk.
