Every German preposition governs a case. Some always take the accusative, some always the dative, a handful the genitive — and nine special "two-way" prepositions switch between accusative and dative depending on whether there is movement or location.

These five always take the accusative (mnemonic: durch-für-gegen-ohne-um):
Also accusative: bis (until) and entlang (along, after its noun: den Fluss entlang).
These always take the dative (also außer, gegenüber):
Trap: nach means "after" (time) or "to" (towns/countries: nach Berlin); seit + present = an action still going on (Ich wohne seit 2019 hier = I have lived here since 2019).
Nine prepositions of place switch case: accusative for movement/direction (wohin?), dative for position (wo?):
| preposition | wohin? (Akk) | wo? (Dat) |
|---|---|---|
| an, auf, hinter | Ich hänge es an die Wand. | Es hängt an der Wand. |
| in, neben, über | Ich gehe in den Garten. | Ich bin in dem Garten. |
| unter, vor, zwischen | Er stellt es unter den Tisch. | Es steht unter dem Tisch. |
Verb clue: "put/go" verbs (legen, stellen, hängen, gehen, fahren) signal movement → accusative; "be/lie/stand" verbs (liegen, stehen, hängen, sein, bleiben) signal location → dative.
Preposition + article often merge — obligatory in speech and normal in writing:
| full form | contraction |
|---|---|
| in dem | im |
| in das | ins |
| an dem | am |
| an das | ans |
| zu dem | zum |
| zu der | zur |
| bei dem / von dem | beim / vom |
Direction lives in the article: ins Haus (in + das → motion, accusative) vs im Haus (in + dem → location, dative).
A small set governs the genitive (though colloquially you hear them with the dative):
Also genitive: außerhalb, innerhalb, aufgrund. In essays the genitive form reads as more precise and formal — prefer it.
Sort each fixed-case preposition into its case.
Tap a full form on the left, then its contraction on the right.
Accusative: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um (+ bis, entlang).
Dative: aus, außer, bei, gegenüber, mit, nach, seit, von, zu.
Two-way: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen — accusative for motion (wohin?), dative for location (wo?).
Genitive: während, trotz, wegen, statt (+ außerhalb, innerhalb).
Contractions: im, ins, am, ans, zum, zur, beim, vom.
