Key concepts
Les vacancesHolidays vocabulary: à la mer (seaside), à la montagne (mountains), à l'étranger (abroad), en colonie de vacances (summer camp).
Les transportsMeans of travel: en avion (by plane), en train, en voiture, en bateau, à pied (on foot).
L'hébergementAccommodation: un hôtel, un camping, une auberge de jeunesse (youth hostel), un gîte (holiday cottage).
Future tensesNear future: 'Je vais aller...' (going to go). Simple future: 'J'irai...' (I will go). Used to talk about holiday plans.
Weather expressionsIl fait beau (nice), il fait chaud (hot), il pleut (raining), il neige (snowing). Often used to describe holidays.
Imperfect tenseUsed for descriptions in the past: 'Il faisait beau' (It was nice). Endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

Common mistakes to avoid
Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:
Do all French verbs follow one pattern?✗ Yes, every verb conjugates the same way. ✓ No — there are regular (-er, -ir, -re) and many irregular verbs.
Does the perfect tense always use 'avoir'?✗ Yes, always 'avoir'. ✓ No — some verbs and all reflexives use 'être' (and agree).
Where do most French adjectives go?✗ Always before the noun, as in English. ✓ Usually after the noun (une voiture rouge).
