La technologieTech vocabulary: l'ordinateur (computer), le portable (mobile/laptop), la tablette, les réseaux sociaux (social networks).
Internet usageInternet verbs: surfer sur internet, télécharger (download), tchatter (to chat), envoyer un mail.
Advantages/disadvantagesDiscussing pros/cons: 'L'avantage, c'est que...', 'L'inconvénient, c'est que...'. Key for GCSE essays.
Modal verbsPouvoir (can), devoir (must), vouloir (want) + infinitive: 'On peut communiquer', 'Il faut faire attention'.
Negative expressionsne...pas (not), ne...jamais (never), ne...rien (nothing), ne...personne (nobody). Both parts sandwich the verb.
CyberbullyingLe cyberharcèlement: harceler (to bully), une victime, dangereux/dangereuse. Common GCSE social issue.
Common mistakes to avoid
Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:
How do you make a French sentence negative?✗ By adding a single word, like English. ✓ Usually by wrapping the verb: ne … pas.
Do all French verbs follow one pattern?✗ Yes, every verb conjugates the same way. ✓ No — there are regular (-er, -ir, -re) and many irregular verbs.
Does the perfect tense always use 'avoir'?✗ Yes, always 'avoir'. ✓ No — some verbs and all reflexives use 'être' (and agree).
