You've spotted ChatGPT open beside their homework and felt that jolt of worry. Take a breath. As two educators, here's the honest answer to the question you're really asking — is my child cheating, or just using a tool everyone now uses? — and what to do about it.
The honest reality
Let's start with the thing that will actually calm the panic: nearly every secondary-school student is now using AI in some form. If your child has a phone and a homework deadline, the odds that they've never once asked a chatbot a question are vanishingly small. That's the world they're growing up in, and no household rule changes the wider tide.
But here is the distinction that matters, and it's the one the alarming headlines skip: using AI is not the same as cheating with it. A child who asks a chatbot to explain photosynthesis a different way is doing exactly what students have always done with a tutor, a textbook or a patient parent — they've just found a new door to the same room. A child who has AI write the essay and hands it in unread has crossed a line. Same tool; completely different act.
The reframe: The question isn't really "is my child using AI?" — they almost certainly are, and that alone isn't a problem. The question is "is my child using it to learn, or to avoid learning?" That's the line worth watching, and the good news is it's a teachable one.
So what actually counts as cheating?
The shortest honest version: if AI produced the work, that's cheating. If AI helped your child understand so that they could produce the work, that's revision. The tool is the same in both cases — what changes is where the thinking happened.
Getting a chatbot to explain, quiz, or check an answer leaves your child's own understanding at the centre. Getting it to generate a finished piece and passing that off as their own removes them from it entirely. That single test settles the vast majority of cases. - Handing in answers they can't explain or reproduce
- Copying a chatbot response unread into a marked assignment
Notice the pattern: the "fine" column keeps your child doing the thinking, while the tool supports it. The "not fine" column hands the thinking over. When you're unsure about a specific case, that's the question to ask.
Coursework & the exam-board line
This is the one area where we'd urge genuine care, because the stakes are higher. There's a real difference between private revision and formal assessment.
For private revision at home — using AI to understand, practise and test — there's no issue at all. It's just a modern study tool. But for formal non-exam assessment (NEA) and coursework, the rules are stricter: passing off AI-generated work as your own can count as malpractice and be penalised, sometimes seriously. That work is meant to be a record of what your child can genuinely do.
We're deliberately not going to quote specific board rules here, because they change and they differ between subjects and awarding bodies. What we can say confidently: if any of your child's grade depends on work produced outside the exam hall, check the school's and exam board's own policy on AI use, and make sure your child knows it. When in doubt, the safest habit is simple — do the work themselves, and keep evidence of the working.
Practical rule of thumb: Revision folder at home? Use AI freely. Anything that will be marked as your child's own assessed work? Assume AI-generated content is off-limits unless the school explicitly says otherwise — and keep the drafts either way.
When schools get it wrong: AI detectors are unreliable
Here's the part almost no one tells worried parents, and it deserves saying plainly: AI-detection tools are widely known to be inaccurate. They can flag a child's completely genuine work as "AI-written" — and they do. A pupil who simply writes in a clear, tidy style, or who is neurodivergent, or who learned a formal register, can trip these tools with no wrongdoing at all.
This means false accusations happen. It's one of the most stressful situations a family can face, because it's hard to prove a negative. So if your child is wrongly accused, here's what to do:
- Stay calm and don't concede. An accusation is not a verdict, and detector output is not proof.
- Gather the evidence of the working. Drafts, version history in Google Docs or Word, browser history, handwritten plans, notes, rough workings — anything that shows the piece was built over time by a human.
- Ask which tool or judgement was used. Politely ask the school what the accusation is actually based on — a specific detector, a teacher's impression, or something else — and whether they know that detectors are unreliable.
- Request assessment on merit. Ask that the work be judged on its content and on your child's demonstrable knowledge, and offer for them to talk through it or reproduce similar work under supervision.
And the best long-term protection? Teach your child to show their working as a matter of habit — keep drafts, jot plans, save version history. A child who can always demonstrate how a piece came together is a child who's almost impossible to wrongly convict. It's the same instinct as showing your working in maths: the answer matters, but the trail proves it's yours.
How to tell if YOUR child is over-relying on it
Separate from cheating is a quieter risk: leaning on AI so much that the learning never sticks. It shows up as a gap between what a child can produce and what they can explain. If the homework is polished but they can't talk you through how they got there, or the mock results don't match the work done at home, that's the signal — not a reason to raid their phone, but a reason for a conversation.
