Memory can be described as three stores information flows through:
Sensory store โ very brief; needs attention to move on.
Short-term memory (STM) โ limited capacity (~7 items), short duration (~18โ30s); kept going by rehearsal.
Long-term memory (LTM) โ huge capacity, long duration.

Memory is reconstructive: we rebuild memories using our schemas, so they can be distorted.
We fill gaps with what we expect to have happened.
This means memory is not a perfect recording and can be influenced by later information.

Loftus & Palmer core study
The OCR core study is Loftus and Palmer (1974) on eyewitness testimony:
Participants watched films of car crashes, then were asked how fast the cars were going.
The verb in the question changed the answer: 'smashed' produced higher speed estimates than 'hit' or 'contacted'.
A week later, those asked with 'smashed' were more likely to falsely remember broken glass.
This showed that leading questions can distort eyewitness memory โ memory is reconstructive.
