What changes over time

From c1550 (Early Modern English) onwards, English changed at every level:

  • Lexical — new words in, old words out.
  • Semantic — words shift meaning.
  • Grammatical — structures and inflections change (loss of thou/thee).
  • Orthographic — spelling and punctuation standardise.
  • Phonological — pronunciation shifts.

Context: the Great Vowel Shift, printing, empire and technology all drove change across this period.

How the vocabulary grows

New words enter through processes such as:

  • Borrowing from other languages (ballet, bungalow).
  • Coinage / neologism (selfie), compounding (laptop), blending (brunch).
  • Affixation (un- + follow) and conversion (to text, to google).
  • Acronyms, clipping (advert) and eponyms (sandwich).

Loss: words also become archaic and obsolete as needs and attitudes change.

How meanings shift

Words keep their form but change meaning:

  • Broadening — meaning widens.
  • Narrowing — meaning contracts (meat once meant any food).
  • Amelioration — becomes more positive (nice once meant foolish).
  • Pejoration — becomes more negative (silly once meant blessed).

Keep separate: broadening/narrowing (scope) vs amelioration/pejoration (value).

Standardisation

English spelling was highly variable in 1550. It standardised through:

  • Caxton's printing press (from 1476) spreading fixed forms.
  • Samuel Johnson's Dictionary (1755) — a landmark codification of the language.
  • Prescriptive grammars and mass schooling.

Haugen described standardisation as selection, codification, elaboration and implementation. A standard variety gains overt prestige.

Remember: Johnson's Dictionary, 1755 — recording usage, not inventing it.

Theories and attitudes to change

Explain both why change happens and how people react:

  • Substratum theory — contact with other languages drives change.
  • Functional theory — language changes to meet new needs.
  • Random fluctuation (Postal) — change with no single cause.
  • Wave and S-curve models — how a change spreads through a community.

Jean Aitchison rejected decline narratives, naming three prescriptivist metaphors: the damp spoon (laziness), the crumbling castle (a mythical perfect past) and the infectious disease (usage is caught).

Debate: prescriptivism (change is decline) vs descriptivism (describe usage without judging).
