Edexcel A-level English Language (9EN0) ยท Language Frameworks and Levels
Mini-Lesson

Language Frameworks and Levels

Edexcel expects you to analyse any text using the language frameworks (or levels). They are a systematic toolkit: name a precise feature, use the right terminology, and explain its effect in context.

You will cover phonology and graphology, lexis and semantics, grammar and morphology, pragmatics and discourse. Press Start.

Frameworks ยท overview

The frameworks toolkit

The frameworks are the layers you examine in any text. A high-level Edexcel response moves across several and always links feature to function.

  • Phonology & prosodics โ€” sounds, stress, rhythm, intonation.
  • Graphology โ€” layout, typography, colour, images.
  • Lexis & semantics โ€” words and meaning.
  • Grammar & morphology โ€” how words are built and combined.
  • Pragmatics โ€” implied meaning in context.
  • Discourse โ€” the organisation of whole texts and interactions.

Assessment tip: terminology alone earns little โ€” always explain the effect for audience and purpose.

Framework ยท lexis & semantics

Lexis and semantics

Lexis is vocabulary; semantics is meaning. Core tools:

  • Denotation (literal meaning) vs connotation (associations).
  • Semantic field โ€” a set of words linked by meaning.
  • Figurative language โ€” metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole.
  • Formality โ€” jargon, colloquialism, slang, and register-marking lexis.

Also useful: synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy help you describe relationships between words precisely.

Denotation or connotation?

?An estate agent calls a small flat cosy. Literally it means comfortably small, but it suggests warmth and charm while avoiding cramped. The suggested associations are its:
Framework ยท grammar

Grammar and morphology

Morphology studies how words are formed from morphemes; grammar (syntax) studies how words combine.

  • Word classes: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, determiner, conjunction.
  • Inflectional morphology โ€” same word class, changed form (cats, walked).
  • Derivational morphology โ€” new word, often a new class (happiness, unkind).
  • Sentence functions: declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamative; main and subordinate clauses.

Watch: a determiner (the, a, this) is its own word class, not an adjective.

Framework ยท pragmatics

Pragmatics

Pragmatics is meaning in context โ€” what is implied, not just stated.

  • Grice's cooperative principle and maxims of quantity, quality, relation and manner; flouting a maxim creates implicature.
  • Face and politeness (Brown & Levinson): positive face (to be liked) and negative face (not to be imposed on); face-threatening acts softened by politeness.
  • Deixis โ€” context-pointing words (here, now, you, this).

Attribute: maxims = Grice; face/politeness = Brown & Levinson.

Quick check

Which framework?

?A colleague says It is quite cold in here with the window open, meaning please close it. Understanding this implied request rather than the literal statement is a matter of:
Framework ยท discourse

Discourse

Discourse is how whole texts and interactions are structured and held together.

  • Cohesion โ€” links such as reference (pronouns), lexical repetition, conjunctions and ellipsis.
  • Coherence โ€” whether the text makes overall sense.
  • In talk: adjacency pairs, turn-taking, openings and closings, topic management.

Exam skill: discourse structure explains how a text guides its reader from start to finish.
