Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland). It balances three pillars: environment, society and economy.
Designers influence sustainability through material choice, energy use, durability, repairability and end-of-life. Sustainable consumption also depends on how much, and how wisely, people buy and use.
Key idea: true sustainability is not one green feature โ it is reducing impact across the whole life while still being viable socially and economically.
A linear economy follows take-make-use-dispose: resources become waste. A circular economy designs out waste and keeps materials in use โ through reuse, repair, remanufacture and recycling โ so products feed back into new production.
Cradle-to-cradle design treats all outputs as nutrients: technical materials cycle back into industry, biological materials safely return to nature. This contrasts with cradle-to-grave.
Watch out: a circular economy is not just recycling โ it prioritises keeping products and components in use for as long as possible before materials are recycled.
Tap a strategy, then tap the life stage it targets.
Biomimicry copies nature's field-tested strategies: shark-skin surfaces that resist drag, self-cooling buildings modelled on termite mounds, hook-and-loop fasteners inspired by burrs.
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) makes manufacturers responsible for their products at end-of-life (take-back, recycling). This gives a direct incentive to design for recyclability and durability. Standards such as ISO 14001 help firms manage environmental impact.
Evaluate: EPR can raise prices but shifts the true cost of disposal onto the producer, encouraging genuinely sustainable design.

Sustainability balances environment, society and economy โ the "triple bottom line" of people, planet and profit. A design that is green but unaffordable, or cheap but exploitative, is not sustainable overall.
Key idea: sustainable design succeeds only when all three pillars are satisfied together.
Impact depends not only on how things are made but on how much we consume. Designers can nudge sustainable consumption through durability, repairability, refillable formats, and honest information that helps users choose and use products wisely.
Business models such as product-as-a-service (leasing, sharing) can cut total consumption.
Circular design depends on getting materials back. Design for disassembly uses snap-fits or screws instead of glue, minimises material types, and labels polymers, so products can be taken apart, repaired and recycled cleanly at end-of-life.
Watch out: mixing bonded, dissimilar materials makes recycling almost impossible.
Frameworks help firms manage and prove sustainability: ISO 14001 for environmental management systems, plus eco-labels and certifications (e.g. responsible-forestry marks). These give buyers trustworthy signals and push producers to improve.
Independent verification guards against greenwashing.
At the system level, sustainability needs clean technology and renewable energy: preventing pollution at source and powering production from wind, solar and hydro. Combined with circular material flows, this is how whole industries decarbonise.
Key idea: product, process and energy must all be addressed โ no single fix is enough.
Sustainable development: meeting present needs without harming future generations' ability to meet theirs.
Circular economy: designing out waste so materials stay in use (vs linear take-make-dispose).
Cradle to cradle: waste from one cycle feeds the next.
Biomimicry: learning from nature's tried-and-tested designs.
