A market is all the potential buyers of a product. Segmentation divides it into groups (segments) that share characteristics โ age, income, lifestyle, needs โ so a product can be targeted at the right people.
Understanding the segment shapes every design decision: features, styling, price point and how the product is promoted. Aiming at everyone usually means appealing strongly to no one.
Key idea: good segmentation lets a designer meet one group's needs precisely, rather than compromising across the whole market.
The marketing mix is the classic 4 Ps: Product (what it is), Price (what it costs the buyer), Place (where it is sold) and Promotion (how it is advertised). All four must align with the target segment.
Branding gives a product a consistent identity โ name, logo, colours, tone โ that builds recognition, trust and loyalty, and can command a price premium.
Watch out: the 4 Ps work together. A premium product (high Price) sold in discount stores (wrong Place) with cheap Promotion sends mixed signals and fails.
Tap what is protected, then tap the correct legal protection.
Market research reduces risk: primary research gathers new data directly (surveys, trials); secondary research uses existing data (reports, sales figures).
Designers protect intellectual property in different ways:
Key idea: protection lets an innovator recoup development costs before rivals can legally copy the design.
Tap a description on the left, then its P on the right.
Markets can be segmented by demographics (age, income), geography, psychographics (lifestyle, values) and behaviour (how and when people buy). Combining bases gives a precise target for the designer to aim at.
Key idea: the clearer the segment, the sharper the design and marketing decisions.
Price is a design signal as well as a number. Skimming launches high to recoup development from early adopters; penetration launches low to win share fast; premium pricing reinforces a luxury brand. Each must fit the product and segment.
Get price wrong and even a great product fails โ too high loses buyers, too low signals poor quality.
A strong brand is a valuable, protectable asset: it carries reputation, commands loyalty and premium prices, and makes launching new products easier. Consistent identity across product, packaging and promotion builds that value over years.
Watch out: a single quality or ethics failure can damage a brand faster than years of marketing built it.
Primary research (surveys, interviews, product trials) gathers fresh, targeted data but costs time and money. Secondary research (published reports, sales data, competitor analysis) is quick and cheap but not tailored to your exact question. Most projects use both.
Good research reduces the risk and cost of launching the wrong product.
Developing an innovation is expensive; copying it is cheap. Legal protection โ patents, trademarks, registered designs and copyright โ gives the innovator time to recoup investment and profit before rivals can legally imitate.
Key idea: match the protection to what is valuable: function (patent), brand (trademark), appearance (registered design/copyright).
Market sectors & segments: dividing a market by shared customer characteristics to target design.
Marketing mix (4 Ps): Product, Price, Place, Promotion.
Branding: a consistent identity that builds recognition, loyalty and perceived value.
Market research: primary (new data) and secondary (existing data) to reduce risk.
Protecting designs: patents (function), trademarks (brand), copyright & registered designs (appearance).
