Communicating design ideas

Designers must share ideas with different audiences — clients, users and manufacturers — and each needs a different kind of drawing. Good communication is fit for its purpose and audience: a persuasive render for a client, a precise working drawing for the workshop.

Sketching

Sketching techniques

  • Freehand sketching (often over a crating/box guide) — fast idea generation.
  • Isometric — a 3D pictorial view where vertical edges stay vertical and others are drawn at 30°; parallel lines stay parallel (no vanishing point).
  • Perspective (one- and two-point) — lines converge to vanishing points, giving the most realistic sense of depth.

Orthographic

Orthographic (working) drawings

Orthographic projection shows an object as flat 2D views — typically a front elevation, plan and side elevation. Drawn to first- or third-angle convention and fully dimensioned to standards (BS 8888), it is the manufacturing drawing the workshop builds from.

Assembly

Exploded and assembly views

An exploded view separates a product along its axes to show how the parts fit together and in what order — the basis of assembly and maintenance instructions (think flat-pack furniture guides).

Rendering

Rendering adds tone, shadow, highlight, reflection and texture so a sketch reads as a real object made of a specific material. Media range from marker pens and coloured pencil to digital rendering in CAD.

Scale

Scale, dimensioning and conventions

Technical drawings use scale (e.g. 1:1 full size, 1:2 half size, 2:1 double size), a consistent system of dimensioning, standard line types, a title block and projection symbol — all governed by BS 8888 so any engineer can read them.

Audience

Other methods & the right audience

  • Schematic / system diagrams & flowcharts — show how electronics or a process work, not physical form.
  • Charts & graphs — present research data clearly.
  • Models & prototypes — communicate scale, feel and function.

Always match the method to the audience: a photorealistic render persuades a client; a dimensioned orthographic drawing instructs a manufacturer.
