Judging a design fairly

Critical analysis and evaluation means judging how well a design meets its purpose β€” using evidence rather than opinion. It runs throughout an iterative project, not just at the end, and leads to justified recommendations for improvement.

Objective vs subjective

  • Objective evaluation uses measurable facts β€” mass, dimensions, test results β€” that anyone would agree on.
  • Subjective evaluation is based on personal opinion and taste β€” "it looks good", "it feels premium".

Strong evaluation relies mainly on objective evidence, using subjective feedback to understand user preference.

Against the spec

Evaluating against the specification

The specification is the yardstick. Take each measurable criterion in turn and test whether the design passes or fails β€” e.g. "must weigh under 500 g", "must cost under Β£20". This gives a structured, evidence-based judgement rather than a vague overall impression.

Testing

Methods of testing

  • User trials / field testing β€” real users use the product in a realistic setting.
  • Destructive testing β€” a sample is tested to failure to find its limits (crash tests, tensile tests).
  • Non-destructive testing β€” checks quality without damaging the product (X-ray, gauges).
