Global Atmospheric CirculationThree-cell model (Hadley, Ferrel, Polar) driven by uneven heating; explains belts of high/low pressure and prevailing winds.
Hadley CellTropical circulation: warm air rises at equator (low pressure, rainforests), descends at 30 degrees (high pressure, deserts).
Coriolis EffectApparent deflection of moving air due to Earth's rotation; right in Northern Hemisphere, left in Southern.
ITCZIntertropical Convergence Zone where trade winds meet near equator; band of heavy convectional rainfall, migrates seasonally.
Frontal RainfallCaused when warm air meets cold air at a front; warm air rises, cools, condenses; typical of UK depressions.
MicroclimateLocal variation in climate over small area due to factors like aspect, urban heat island, water bodies or vegetation.
Ice CoresCylinders of glacial ice showing past CO₂ and temperatures.

Common mistakes to avoid

Questions where students often pick the tempting wrong answer — make sure you know the right one:

Why can a cold winter NOT disprove climate change?✗ A really cold winter proves global warming is not happening.   ✓ Climate is the long-term statistical average; a single cold winter is a weather event. Climate change is the trend in averages and extremes over decades, not the absence of cold days.
What is the difference between weather and climate?✗ Weather happens outside and climate happens globally.   ✓ Weather is short-term atmospheric conditions at a specific time and place; climate is the long-term (typically 30-year) average of weather patterns in a region.
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?✗ The greenhouse effect is entirely man-made and harmful.   ✓ The strengthening of the natural greenhouse effect by human activities (mainly burning fossil fuels) which add CO2 and other gases to the atmosphere.
What is the difference between mitigation and adaptation to climate change?✗ Mitigation and adaptation mean the same thing — both are about stopping climate change.   ✓ Mitigation reduces the causes (cutting greenhouse gas emissions); adaptation reduces the impacts (e.g. building sea walls, drought-resistant crops, early warning systems).
What causes global sea level rise?✗ Sea level rises mainly because Arctic sea ice is melting.   ✓ Two main factors: thermal expansion of warming seawater, and the melting of land-based ice (glaciers and ice sheets) adding water to oceans.
