Why do we sleep?
Sleep is a natural, regular state of reduced awareness. Theories of why we sleep include:
Restoration β sleep lets the body and brain repair and recover.
Circadian rhythm β a roughly 24-hour body clock controls the sleepβwake cycle.
Sleep is affected by internal influences (the body clock) and external influences (light, temperature, screens).

Internal & external influences on sleep
Both the body and the environment affect sleep:
Internal: the circadian rhythm and hormones such as melatonin, which rises in darkness.

Freud's theory of dreaming
Freud believed dreams reveal the unconscious mind:
Dreams are a form of wish fulfilment β expressing hidden desires.
The manifest content is the actual story of the dream; the latent content is its hidden meaning.
Evaluation: influential but hard to test scientifically, as unconscious meaning can't be directly measured.

Activation-synthesis theory
Hobson and McCarley (1977) gave a biological theory of dreaming β activation-synthesis:
During REM sleep, the brain produces random electrical activity ('activation').
The brain then tries to make sense of this random activity by weaving it into a story ('synthesis').
So dreams have no hidden meaning β they are the brain's attempt to interpret random signals. This contrasts sharply with Freud.
