Sensation vs perception
These two words sound similar but mean different things:
Sensation β the raw information our sense organs (e.g. the eyes) detect and send to the brain.
Perception β how the brain selects, organises and interprets that sensory information to make sense of it.
Key idea: perception is more than seeing β it is the brain making meaning out of what the senses detect.

Monocular & binocular depth cues
We see the world in 3D using depth cues. AQA splits them into two groups:
Monocular cues (need only one eye): height in the plane, relative size, occlusion (near objects block far ones), linear perspective (parallel lines meeting).
Binocular cues (need both eyes): retinal disparity (each eye sees a slightly different image) and convergence (the eyes turn inwards for near objects).
Remember: mono = one eye; bi = two eyes. Artists use monocular cues to make flat paintings look deep.

Perception Β· illusions
Visual illusions & why they fool us
A visual illusion is a conflict between what is really there and what we perceive. AQA gives four explanations:
Ambiguity β the image can be seen two ways (e.g. the Necker cube, Rubin's vase).
Misinterpreted depth cues β we wrongly apply depth cues (e.g. the MΓΌller-Lyer and Ponzo illusions).
Fiction β we perceive something that is not there (e.g. the Kanizsa triangle).
Size constancy β the brain adjusts perceived size using depth, which can misfire (e.g. the Ames room).

Perception Β· Gibson
Gibson's direct theory (nature)
Gibson's direct theory says perception is a nature process. There is enough information in the optic array (the light reaching the eye) to perceive directly, with no need to guess.
We use cues like motion parallax β as we move, near objects sweep past quickly and far objects slowly β to judge depth directly.
Perception is innate and works from the bottom up.
Evaluation: good at explaining real-world perception during movement, but it struggles to explain visual illusions.
Perception Β· Gregory
Gregory's constructivist theory (nurture)
Gregory's constructivist theory says perception is a nurture process. The brain uses past experience to make an inference β a 'best guess' β about what we see.
We build up perception from stored knowledge and expectations (top-down).
This explains visual illusions well: they happen when our best guess is wrong.
Evaluation: strong on illusions, but weaker at explaining how we perceive fast and accurately in the real world.

Perceptual constancies
The brain keeps our perception stable even as the raw image changes:
Size constancy β an object looks the same size even as it moves nearer or further.
Shape constancy β a door still looks rectangular even when opened at an angle.
Constancies usually help us, but can misfire and help create illusions (e.g. the Ames room).

The natureβnurture debate in perception
The GibsonβGregory debate is really about nature vs nurture:
Gibson (nature) β perception is innate and direct.
Gregory (nurture) β perception is learned from experience.
Balanced view: most psychologists think perception involves both β some direct information and some learned inference.
