Language & thought

Piaget vs Sapir-Whorf

Two theories disagree about how language and thought are linked:

  • Piaget: language depends on thought. A child must first develop a concept, then they learn the words for it. Thinking comes first.
  • Sapir-Whorf hypothesis: thinking depends on language. The language you speak shapes the way you think and perceive the world (linguistic relativity).

Supporting evidence for Sapir-Whorf: differences in how cultures recall events and recognise colours, e.g. cultures with more colour words distinguishing shades more easily.

Verbal & non-verbal communication

Communication is passing information between individuals.

  • Verbal communication uses words โ€” spoken or written language.
  • Non-verbal communication passes information without words โ€” through body language, gestures, facial expressions and eye contact.

Human communication can do things animal communication cannot, such as plan ahead and discuss the future or abstract ideas.

AQA asks you to know the functions of these non-verbal signals:

  • Eye contact โ€” regulates the flow of conversation, signals attraction and expresses emotion.
  • Body language โ€” open vs closed posture shows how relaxed or defensive we are.
  • Postural echo โ€” copying another's posture signals liking and rapport.
  • Touch โ€” can communicate affection, comfort or power.

Von Frisch's bee study

Von Frisch studied how honeybees communicate the location of food using a waggle dance:

  • The direction of the dance (relative to the sun) shows the direction of the food.
  • The duration/speed of the waggle shows the distance to the food.
  • This shows animal communication can be surprisingly detailed โ€” but it is limited to survival needs like food, and cannot discuss the past or future.

Limits of animal communication: functions are limited (survival, reproduction, territory, food); it lacks the planning and abstract range of human language.
