Arousal (biological)
Key research: Fazey and Hardy (1988)
Background: optimising arousal and controlling anxiety. The inverted-U hypothesis says performance rises with arousal up to an optimum and then declines gradually. Anxiety has two components: cognitive anxiety (worry) and somatic anxiety (physical symptoms), measured with instruments such as the CSAI-2.
Key research โ Fazey and Hardy (1988), The inverted-U hypothesis: a catastrophe for sport psychology. This is a theoretical monograph, not an empirical study โ say so when evaluating it.
The argument: the smooth inverted U is wrong. Arousal interacts with cognitive anxiety. When cognitive anxiety is low, increasing physiological arousal produces a gentle inverted-U. But when cognitive anxiety is high, performance rises with arousal and then, past a critical point, drops catastrophically โ a sudden collapse, not a gentle decline.
The crucial prediction: recovery from a catastrophe is not achieved by slightly reducing arousal. The performer must reduce arousal a long way below the point at which they collapsed before performance recovers โ which is exactly what 'the yips' and a total collapse in a final look like.
Application: at least one technique for managing arousal and anxiety โ e.g. progressive muscular relaxation and centred breathing (somatic), imagery, self-talk and cognitive restructuring (cognitive), and pre-performance routines.
Exercise (biological)
Key research: Lewis et al. (2014)
Background: the benefits of exercise for mental health. Proposed mechanisms include endorphin and monoamine release, improved sleep, distraction from rumination, and increased self-efficacy and social contact.
Key research โ Lewis et al. (2014), Mood changes following social dance sessions in people with Parkinson's disease.
Method: participants with Parkinson's disease attended social dance sessions. Mood was measured before and after sessions using a standardised mood measure โ a repeated measures design.
Findings: mood improved significantly after the dance sessions โ participants reported reduced negative mood states and increased positive feeling. The effect was found in a real clinical population, not in healthy students.
Why dance: it combines physical exercise (which is beneficial for motor symptoms), music and rhythm (which can help cue movement in Parkinson's), and social contact โ so it targets several mechanisms at once.
Application: at least one exercise strategy to improve mental health โ e.g. social, group-based, enjoyable and achievable exercise (dance, walking groups), goal-setting to build self-efficacy, and exercise on prescription.
Evaluate it: a real clinical sample with a clear practical application and a repeated-measures design that controls participant variables. But there was no full control group receiving an equivalent non-exercise social activity, so we cannot separate the effect of exercise from the effect of social contact; mood was self-reported immediately afterwards, so demand characteristics and short-lived effects are both possible.

Motivation (cognitive)
Key research: Munroe-Chandler et al. (2008)
Background:self-efficacy (Bandura โ the belief that you can execute the behaviour needed for a given outcome) and sport confidence, and the use of imagery to build them. Imagery has several functions, including motivational general-mastery (MG-M) imagery โ imagining yourself being confident, in control and coping.
Key research โ Munroe-Chandler et al. (2008), Playing with confidence: imagery use, self-confidence and self-efficacy in youth soccer players.
Method: youth soccer players completed questionnaires measuring how much and what type of imagery they used, alongside measures of self-confidence and self-efficacy. The design is correlational.
Findings: imagery use predicted self-confidence and self-efficacy, with motivational general-mastery imagery emerging as the strongest predictor. Older players' confidence was predicted somewhat differently from younger players'.
Conclusion: imagining yourself coping and being in control โ not just imagining the skill โ is what builds confidence.
Application: at least one strategy for motivating athletes โ e.g. structured MG-M imagery scripts, mastery-oriented goal setting (process goals over outcome goals), and building self-efficacy through past performance accomplishments, vicarious experience and verbal persuasion.
Evaluate it: a real sample of youth athletes, with a clear coaching application. But it is correlational โ confident players may simply use more imagery โ and it relies entirely on self-report questionnaires, which invite social desirability.

Personality (cognitive)
Key research: Kroll and Crenshaw (1970)
Background: personality, how it is measured, and whether it relates to sport. Is there an 'athletic personality'? Does sport select certain personalities, or shape them?
Key research โ Kroll and Crenshaw (1970), Multivariate personality profile analysis of four athletic groups.
Method: athletes from four sports โ American football, gymnastics, wrestling and karate โ completed Cattell's 16PF personality questionnaire. Their profiles were compared using multivariate analysis.
Findings: there was no single 'athletic personality' common to all athletes. Some groups differed from one another (the profiles of the football players and wrestlers were relatively similar to each other, while the karate participants were more distinct), but the differences were not large or consistent enough to support the idea that a given personality type produces a given sport.
Application: at least one strategy for using knowledge of personality to improve performance โ e.g. tailoring coaching style to the individual (an introverted, highly aroused athlete needs different pre-match handling from an extraverted one), and using personality data to support, not to select or exclude.
Evaluate it: an objective, standardised measure with a clear multivariate analysis. But personality questionnaires are self-report and vulnerable to social desirability; the sample is dated, male and American; and โ crucially โ even a genuine difference cannot tell you whether the sport attracted that personality or built it.

Key research: Smith et al. (1979)
Background: teams, coaching and leadership. The coach's behaviour shapes not just performance but enjoyment, self-esteem and whether a young athlete continues in sport at all.
Key research โ Smith, Smoll and Curtis (1979), Coach Effectiveness Training (CET).
Method: Little League baseball coaches were randomly assigned to receive Coach Effectiveness Training โ a cognitive-behavioural programme teaching them to give more reinforcement and encouragement, more technical instruction after mistakes, and less punishment and criticism โ or to a control group. Coaches' behaviour was observed and coded, and their players were interviewed at the end of the season.
Findings: trained coaches behaved as instructed (more reinforcement, less punitive control). Their players liked their coach and their team-mates more, enjoyed the season more, and showed higher self-esteem โ and, in follow-up work, the drop-out rate from the sport was substantially lower for players of trained coaches. Win-loss records did not differ.
Application: at least one strategy for improving team performance โ e.g. training coaches to use a positive approach (reinforce effort, give corrective instruction sandwiched between encouragement), team-building and shared goal setting.
The killer point: the trained coaches did not win more games โ but their players enjoyed it more, felt better about themselves, and kept playing. That is what 'improving team performance' should mean for youth sport.

Key research: Zajonc et al. (1969)
Background: how an audience facilitates or inhibits performance, and home advantage. Zajonc's drive theory: the presence of others raises arousal, and arousal strengthens the dominant response โ which is the correct response for a well-learned, simple task, but the wrong one for a novel, complex task.
Key research โ Zajonc, Heingartner and Herman (1969), Social enhancement and impairment of performance in the cockroach.
Method: cockroaches ran either a simple runway (easy, dominant response = run straight) or a complex maze (requiring a turn). They ran either alone, in the presence of an audience of other cockroaches in adjacent boxes, or in coaction (running alongside another cockroach).
Findings: on the simple runway, the presence of an audience or a co-actor made the cockroaches faster (social facilitation). On the complex maze, the same presence made them slower (social inhibition).
Why a cockroach? Because a cockroach cannot be worried about being evaluated. If the effect appears even in an insect, the mechanism must be simple arousal, not evaluation apprehension โ a very elegant argument.
Application: at least one strategy for training for and playing spectator sports โ e.g. over-learn skills until the correct response is dominant, train in front of audiences and with crowd noise, and use imagery and pre-performance routines to manage arousal.
Evaluate it: beautifully controlled, and the choice of cockroach is a genuine methodological strength for testing drive theory. But extrapolating from insects to human athletes is a real weakness โ human performance in front of a crowd involves evaluation apprehension, self-presentation and meaning, none of which a cockroach has.

Issues and debates
Debates in sport and exercise psychology
Usefulness: extremely high. Every topic yields a coachable strategy โ relaxation and imagery, MG-M imagery scripts, positive coaching, over-learning before performing in front of a crowd, and exercise on prescription.
Reductionism: drive theory reduces the roar of a stadium to a level of arousal; catastrophe theory reintroduces the interaction with cognition โ a good example of a more holistic model replacing a simple one.
Nature/nurture: is a champion born (personality, physiology) or made (coaching, imagery training, practice)? Kroll and Crenshaw found no single athletic personality, which weakens the 'born' side.
Ethics and extrapolation: Zajonc used cockroaches โ controlled and elegant, but a long way from a penalty shoot-out. Animal research also raises the standard ethical questions.
Individual differences: athletes differ in optimal arousal, in anxiety type and in what motivates them โ which is exactly why coaching must be individualised.

Munroe-Chandler et al. (2008) โ a correlational questionnaire study. Real youth athletes and a clear application, but no causal claim and social desirability.
