Environmental psychology

Stressors (biological)

Key research: Black and Black (2007)

Background: environmental stressors โ€” noise, crowding, heat, pollution โ€” and their biological effects. Chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system and the HPA axis; sustained activation raises blood pressure and cardiovascular risk.

Key research โ€” Black and Black (2007), Aircraft noise exposure and residents' stress and hypertension.

  • Method: a large community survey of residents living near Sydney airport, comparing an area with high aircraft-noise exposure with a matched area with little exposure. Measures included self-reported noise stress and reported/measured hypertension.
  • Findings: residents chronically exposed to aircraft noise reported significantly higher noise stress, and the high-exposure group showed a higher prevalence of hypertension than the low-exposure group.
  • Conclusion: chronic environmental noise is not merely an annoyance โ€” it is associated with a measurable physiological health cost.
  • Application: at least one strategy for managing environmental stress โ€” e.g. double glazing and sound insulation, flight-path and night-flight restrictions, planning controls on building near airports, and green buffers.

Evaluate it: real people in a real environment, with a large sample and high ecological validity. But it is correlational โ€” noise exposure was not manipulated, so we cannot rule out that poorer, more stressed people live in cheaper, noisier areas. Some measures relied on self-report, raising response bias.

Rhythms (biological)

Key research: Czeisler et al. (1982)

Background: the circadian rhythm is an endogenous roughly 24-hour cycle, governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and entrained by external zeitgebers (chiefly light). Shift work and jet lag desynchronise the internal clock from the external world, causing sleep loss, poor health and errors.

Key research โ€” Czeisler et al. (1982), Rotating shift work schedules that disrupt sleep are improved by applying circadian principles.

  • Sample: shift workers at an industrial plant (the Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemicals Corporation) who were rotating shifts backwards (phase-advance) every week, and who reported severe sleep and health problems.
  • Intervention: the researchers applied two circadian principles โ€” rotate shifts forwards (a phase delay: morning โ†’ evening โ†’ night, which the body finds far easier than moving backwards) and rotate less often (every 21 days rather than every 7), giving the clock time to adjust.
  • Findings: workers on the new schedule reported better sleep, greater satisfaction with their schedule, and the plant reported improved productivity and lower staff turnover.
  • Application: at least one strategy for reducing the effects of jet lag or shift work โ€” e.g. forward-rotating and slowly-rotating shift schedules, timed bright-light exposure, melatonin, and planned napping.

Recycling (cognitive)

Key research: Lord (1994)

Background: conservation behaviours and the factors that influence whether people recycle โ€” attitudes, norms, convenience, and the way a message is framed.

Key research โ€” Lord (1994), Motivating recycling behaviour: message and source strategies.

  • Design: a quasi-experiment with households. The message was framed either positively (the benefits of recycling) or negatively (the costs of not recycling), and it came from different sources โ€” a personal contact (a friend or neighbour), a newspaper advertisement, or a newspaper news story. Recycling behaviour and attitudes were then measured.
  • Findings: the source mattered greatly: messages delivered by personal contact were far more effective at changing behaviour than the same message in an advertisement. Negatively framed messages had more impact on beliefs and attitudes, while positively framed messages were more persuasive in some conditions โ€” the message-source combination mattered more than either alone.
  • Application: at least one technique to increase recycling โ€” e.g. personal, face-to-face or neighbour-delivered prompts; kerbside collection to remove effort; social norm feedback ('most of your street recycles'); and clear labelling at the point of disposal.

Ergonomics (cognitive)

Key research: Drews and Doig (2014)

Background: ergonomics (human factors) designs equipment and workplaces around human cognitive limits. When information is presented as a mass of separate numbers, it imposes a heavy cognitive load and the operator must integrate it themselves โ€” slowly, and with errors.

Key research โ€” Drews and Doig (2014), Evaluation of a configural vital sign display for intensive care unit nurses.

  • The idea: a configural display represents multiple vital signs as a single emergent shape, so that an abnormal patient state appears as a distorted shape that can be recognised at a glance โ€” pre-attentively โ€” instead of requiring the nurse to read and mentally combine several numbers.
  • Method: ICU nurses viewed clinical scenarios on either the configural display or the conventional numeric display, and had to detect and identify patient deterioration.
  • Findings: with the configural display, nurses were faster and more accurate at detecting and identifying changes in patient state, and reported it as easier to use.
  • Application: at least one workplace design based on ergonomic research โ€” e.g. configural or graphical displays in ICUs and cockpits, colour-coded alarms that discriminate urgency, and reducing alarm fatigue by cutting false alarms.

Built environment (social)

Key research: Ulrich (1984)

Background: the impact of the built environment and urban renewal on wellbeing. Biophilia and attention restoration theory both propose that natural views reduce stress and restore depleted attention.

Key research โ€” Ulrich (1984), View through a window may influence recovery from surgery.

  • Method: a natural experiment using hospital records from a Pennsylvania hospital. 23 matched pairs of patients recovering from gall-bladder surgery were compared: one of each pair had a room with a window looking onto a small stand of deciduous trees; the other looked onto a brick wall. Pairs were matched on age, sex, smoking, weight and other relevant variables.
  • Findings: patients with the tree view had shorter post-operative hospital stays, received fewer negative comments in nurses' notes, and took fewer strong analgesic doses (they took more weak ones instead).
  • Conclusion: a view of nature has a measurable effect on physical recovery โ€” the built environment is not just a backdrop but a health intervention.
  • Application: at least one environmental design used to improve health or wellbeing โ€” e.g. hospital gardens and window views, natural light in wards and schools, and green space in urban renewal.

Evaluate it: real patients, objective outcome measures (length of stay, analgesic doses) and careful matching โ€” but the sample is small (23 pairs) and narrow (one hospital, one operation, one climate), the researchers could not allocate patients to rooms, and window rooms may have differed in other ways (light, noise). Nurses' notes are also a subjective measure.

Key research: Wells (2000)

Background: territory and personal space in the workplace. Marking a space as your own supports identity, control and belonging; open-plan and hot-desking remove that control.

Key research โ€” Wells (2000), Office clutter or meaningful personal displays?

  • Method: a survey of a large sample of office employees, plus their managers, across a number of companies. Wells measured how much employees personalised their workspace, their satisfaction with the physical work environment, their job satisfaction and their wellbeing.
  • Findings: women personalised their spaces more than men, and did so differently (women more often displayed items about relationships; men more often displayed items about achievement and status). Personalisation was associated with greater satisfaction with the work environment, which in turn was associated with higher job satisfaction and wellbeing. Companies that allowed more personalisation had employees who reported better wellbeing โ€” though many managers saw personalisation as clutter and unprofessional.
  • Application: at least one office design strategy based on research into territory or personal space โ€” e.g. permitting personalisation, providing assigned desks or personal lockers where hot-desking is used, and offering private zones alongside open-plan areas.

Evaluate it: a large, real-world sample with a clear practical application. But it is correlational โ€” happy employees may personalise more, rather than personalisation causing happiness โ€” and it relies on self-report, so social desirability is a risk.

Issues and debates

Debates in environmental psychology

  • Usefulness: this is the option's greatest strength. Every key study yields something a hospital, employer, council or airport can actually do โ€” window views, forward-rotating shifts, configural displays, kerbside collection.
  • Ethics and social control: designing environments to change behaviour (nudging people to recycle, redesigning offices to raise productivity) shapes behaviour without consent. Ask who benefits โ€” the employee, or the employer?
  • Determinism: environmental determinism claims the environment shapes us; but people also actively shape their environments (Wells's personalisation).
  • Validity: most of the research here has excellent ecological validity (real ICUs, real patients, real shift workers) but weak internal validity โ€” few of these are true experiments, so causal claims must be made cautiously.
  • Individual differences: people vary in noise sensitivity, chronotype (larks and owls) and need for personal space โ€” a one-size-fits-all environment will not suit everyone.

  • Every topic can be examined through its background, its key research, or its application to a novel situation โ€” an airport, a hospital, an office, a council recycling scheme.
  • The standout debate is usefulness: this option is packed with research that changes real design decisions. Its standing weakness is internal validity โ€” most of it is correlational or quasi-experimental.

Be ruthless about causation. Aircraft noise is associated with hypertension; a tree view is associated with shorter stays. Say 'associated', then explain why you cannot say 'caused'.
