Participation

Factors affecting participation

Different social groups take part at different rates. Factors include age, gender, ethnicity, disability and socio-economic group (cost, access, time), plus family, friends and role models.

Strategies to raise participation: cheaper or subsidised access, better local facilities, targeted campaigns and promoting positive role models.

Quick check

A barrier to participation

?A young person stops playing rugby because the nearest club is far away and they have no transport. Which factor is limiting participation?
Commercialisation

Commercialisation & the golden triangle

Commercialisation runs sport as a business to make money. The golden triangle links sport, sponsorship and the media, each helping the others grow.

  • Advantages: more money for performers and clubs; global coverage; fans watch from home; sponsors advertise.
  • Disadvantages: events rescheduled for TV; too many adverts; minority sports get little coverage; pressure to win can lead to cheating.

The golden triangle

?Which three elements make up the golden triangle of commercialised sport?
Conduct

Sportsmanship, gamesmanship & deviance

  • Sportsmanship โ€” fair play and respect (kicking the ball out so an injured player is treated).
  • Gamesmanship โ€” bending the rules for an edge without breaking them (time-wasting, sledging).
  • Deviance โ€” breaking the rules or the law (violence, cheating, doping).
Quick check

Gamesmanship

?A player deliberately wastes time and fakes an injury to disrupt the opposition, without technically breaking a rule. This is best described as:
Drugs in sport

Performance-enhancing drugs

Some athletes cheat with banned drugs. Learn each type, its effect and a suited sport:

  • Anabolic steroids โ€” build muscle and allow harder training (power sports).
  • Beta blockers โ€” steady the hands and calm nerves (archery, shooting, snooker).
  • Stimulants โ€” increase alertness and reduce tiredness.
  • Diuretics โ€” lose water to make weight or mask other drugs.
  • EPO / blood doping โ€” raise red blood cells to carry more oxygen (endurance events).

Why banned: unfair advantage, serious health risks and damage to the reputation of sport.
