Physical, emotional & social well-being
Health is complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of illness. Regular activity benefits all three:
Physical — stronger heart and muscles, healthy weight, lower disease risk.
Emotional (mental) — less stress, better mood, more confidence.
Social — friendship, teamwork and a sense of belonging.

Sedentary lifestyle
The sedentary lifestyle
A sedentary lifestyle means very little activity. Over time it raises the risk of:
weight gain and obesity ;
coronary heart disease and high blood pressure;
type 2 diabetes ;
weaker bones and muscles, poorer posture and lower fitness.

Diet
A balanced diet & energy balance
A balanced diet provides the right nutrients in the right amounts:
Carbohydrates — the main energy source for exercise.
Proteins — growth and repair of muscle and tissue.
Fats — energy store and insulation (in moderation).
Vitamins & minerals — e.g. calcium for bones, iron for red blood cells.
Fibre and water — digestion and hydration.
Energy balance: energy in = energy out keeps weight stable; a surplus is stored as fat.

Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI = mass (kg) ÷ height² (m²)square the height first, then divide the mass by it
Worked example
Mass = 70 kg , height = 1.75 m . height² = 3.0625.
BMI = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9 .
Limitation: BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so a muscular athlete may score "overweight" despite low body fat.
