The DAW
A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is the digital studio: record, sequence, edit, mix and arrange on multiple tracks.
Key features: multitrack recording, MIDI sequencing, quantise (snapping notes to the grid), looping, automation and audio effects.
It puts a whole studio inside a computer.

Making sound
Synthesis
A synthesiser generates sound electronically. Common methods:
Subtractive synthesis: start with a rich waveform (saw or square) and filter frequencies away.
FM synthesis: one oscillator modulates another to create complex timbres.
Additive synthesis: build a sound by adding simple sine waves.
Shape the sound with an envelope (ADSR: attack, decay, sustain, release) and with filters.

Sampling
Sampling is taking a segment of existing recorded sound and reusing it musically (a drum break, a vocal, a horn stab).
It is central to hip-hop and much electronic music; samples can be looped, chopped, pitched and layered.
It raises creative and copyright questions — a real-world issue for the digital music-maker.

MIDI and sequencing
MIDI carries performance data (which note, how hard, how long) — not the audio itself.
A sequencer records and edits MIDI so you can change the sound, fix timing (quantise) or edit notes after playing.
This separation of performance data from sound is a foundation of modern production.
Mixing balances all tracks — levels, panning (left and right placement) and effects — into a finished stereo whole.
Automation lets these change over time (a filter sweep into a drop).
