What this area explores
Music with a job to do
Music that heightens drama and supports movement or entertainment: opera, ballet, musical theatre, film, TV and game scores, and dance musics.
The music serves a dramatic or physical purpose — setting mood, timing action, driving dance.
Dramatic techniques
Tools for dramatic impact
Leitmotif: a recurring theme representing a character, place or idea (used in opera by Wagner and in film scores).
Word-painting: music that mirrors the words (a rising melody on “ascend,” dissonance on “pain”).
Underscoring: music under dialogue or action to shape mood.
Ostinato and pedal: repetition to build tension or momentum.

Diegetic versus non-diegetic
Diegetic music exists in the story world — characters can hear it (a radio, a band on screen).
Non-diegetic music is added for the audience only — the score the characters cannot hear.
Composers switch between them for effect.

Music for movement
Rhythm for dance
Dance music foregrounds strong, regular metre and clear rhythm so bodies can move.
A waltz is in triple time (three beats); a march is in duple or quadruple time.
Ballet uses orchestral scores to depict character and action; club and EDM use a steady four-on-the-floor beat with build-ups and drops for the dancefloor.

Stage music
Opera and musical theatre
Opera: sung drama; arias (solo showcases of emotion) and recitative (sung speech that moves the plot).
Musical theatre: songs, dialogue and dance tell a story; big ensemble numbers and reprises.
In both, music defines character and drives the drama.
Illustrative music
Word-painting and mickey-mousing
Word-painting (text-painting): the music imitates the meaning of the lyrics.
Mickey-mousing (in film and animation): the music synchronises tightly with on-screen action (a rising slide as a character climbs).
Both make the music vividly illustrative.

Tempo, dynamics and dissonance

Skills
Analysing dramatic music
Ask what the music is doing for the drama or movement: what mood, what timing, what character? Identify leitmotif, word-painting, metre for dance, and diegetic or non-diegetic music, and link each to its dramatic effect.
