IB Diploma German B SL · Grammar backbone 7 of 10 — Konjunktiv II and the conditional
IB German B Grammar

Konjunktiv II

The Konjunktiv II is German's subjunctive of the unreal: hypotheticals, wishes and polite requests. You need the short forms (wäre, hätte, könnte…), the workhorse würde + infinitive, and both the present and past conditional.

Wenn … hätte, … würdemachenWenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.

Work through each screen and answer the questions — some ask you to spot the form, some to build it. Collect ⭐ and press Start.

This grammar backbone powers every IB German B theme: Identities, Experiences, Human ingenuity, Social organization and Sharing the planet — so you can build accurate texts across paper 1, paper 2 and the individual oral.

The short forms

wäre, hätte and friends

A core set of verbs has neat one-word Konjunktiv II forms (built from the Präteritum + umlaut + -e). Learn them cold:

infinitiveKonjunktiv II (ich / er)
seinwäre
habenhätte
werdenwürde
könnenkönnte
müssenmüsste
wissenwüsste

Endings: -e / -est / -e / -en / -et / -en → ich wäre, du wärst, wir wären. Also useful: dürfte, sollte, möchte.

würde + infinitive

The workhorse form

Regular verbs' Konjunktiv II looks identical to the Präteritum (spielte, kaufte), which is ambiguous. So for ordinary verbs, German uses würde + infinitive instead:

  • Ich würde gern nach Italien fahren.
  • Was würdest du an meiner Stelle machen?

But not for everything: keep the short forms for sein, haben and the modals — say Ich wäre …, Ich hätte …, Ich könnte …, not würde sein/haben.

?Complete: Ich ___ gern nach Italien fahren. ("I would love to go to Italy.")

Politeness

Softening with Konjunktiv II

Konjunktiv II makes requests and opinions polite — a marker of good IB German B register:

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? — "Could you help me, please?"
  • Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. — "I'd like a coffee."
  • Ich würde sagen, dass … — "I would say that …"

Exam habit: swapping Ich will for Ich möchte / Ich hätte gern instantly lifts the tone.

Quick check

A polite request

?Complete: ___ Sie mir bitte helfen? ("Could you help me, please?") — from können.

Your turn — wäre

1Fill the Konjunktiv II: Wenn ich reich ___, wäre ich glücklich. ("If I were rich …") — from sein, ich-form.
Hint: the KII short form of 'sein'.
Conditionals

Present unreal — wenn … würde …

An unreal (hypothetical) condition puts Konjunktiv II in both halves. The wenn-clause sends its verb to the end; the main clause typically uses würde (or a short form):

  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.

Fronted wenn-clause: verb–comma–verb still applies — … hätte, würde ich …

Quick check

In the wenn-clause

?Complete: Wenn ich mehr Zeit ___, würde ich mehr lesen. ("If I had more time …") — from haben.
Type it

Your turn — würde

2Fill the Konjunktiv II: Was ___ du an meiner Stelle machen? ("What would you do in my place?") — from werden, du-form.
Hint: KII of 'werden' in the du-form, then the infinitive 'machen' at the end.

Past unreal

The unreal past — hätte / wäre + participle

To say what would have happened (a counterfactual about the past), use hätte or wäre + past participle. The haben/sein split is the same as the perfect:

  • Ich hätte das nicht gemacht. — "I wouldn't have done that."
  • Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen.

Watch the ends: in the wenn-clause the auxiliary goes last (… gewusst hätte); in the main clause it takes slot 2 (wäre ich gekommen).

Quick check

Unreal past

?Complete: Wenn ich das gewusst ___, wäre ich gekommen. ("If I had known that, I would have come.")

?Complete: Ich ___ jetzt gern zu Hause. ("I would like to be at home now.") — from sein.
