Advanced structures

These are the structures that lift you into the top bands. Cambridge IGCSE German is untiered, so every student can reach for them — the Konjunktiv II (wäre, hätte, könnte), the würde-conditional, and relative clauses are the real stretch, while comparatives and superlatives you'll use every day. We'll flag the stretchier ones as we go.

ADVANCED marks a stretch structure. Work through each screen and answer the questions. Collect ⭐ stars and press Start.

Konjunktiv II ADVANCED

The "would" mood

Konjunktiv II expresses things that are hypothetical or polite — "would be", "would have", "could", "would like":

fromKonjunktiv IImeaning
seinich wäreI would be
habenich hätteI would have
könnenich könnteI could
mögenich möchteI would like

möchte is the friendly gateway: you already use it for "I'd like". wäre, hätte, könnte work the same way and take the usual endings (-e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en).

Konjunktiv II ADVANCED

wäre, hätte, könnte in action

  • Das wäre toll! — That would be great!
  • Ich hätte gern eine Cola. — I would like a cola. (very polite)
  • Könntest du mir helfen? — Could you help me?

Politeness upgrade: Ich hätte gern… and Könnten Sie…? sound far more mature than Ich will… — a quick way to lift your speaking.

Type it

Your turn — "would be"

1Write the ich/er Konjunktiv II of sein ("would be").
Hint: take war, add an umlaut and -ew…e.
The conditional ADVANCED

würde + infinitive

For most verbs, the easiest "would" is würde + an infinitive at the end — exactly like a modal:

Ich würde mehr lesen.würde (2nd) … infinitive (end) = I would read more
  • Ich würde nach Japan reisen. — I would travel to Japan.
  • Wir würden ein Haus kaufen. — We would buy a house.

würde-forms: ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie würden. Use wäre/hätte for "to be/have", and würde + infinitive for everything else.

Conditional sentences ADVANCED

wenn … hätte, würde ich …

Put them together for "if … then" sentences. The wenn-clause uses Konjunktiv II with the verb at the end; the main clause starts with würde (or wäre/hätte):

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen.…hätte, würde… → the tell-tale verb-comma-verb
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. — If I were rich, I'd travel the world.

Mirror of cluster 8: the wenn-clause fills slot 1, so the main clause opens with its verb — …hätte, würde ich….

Comparatives

bigger, faster: add -er + als

To compare, add -er to the adjective; "than" is als. Short adjectives often add an umlaut:

  • schnell → schneller: Ich bin schneller als mein Bruder.
  • groß → größer (umlaut): Berlin ist größer als Köln.
  • alt → älter, jung → jünger (umlaut).

"than" is als, never wie: größer wie is a common slip. Use so … wie only for "as … as": so groß wie.

Superlatives & irregulars

the fastest: am -sten

For "the most", use am … -sten. A few very common adjectives are irregular — memorise them:

adjectivecomparativesuperlative
schnellschnelleram schnellsten
großgrößeram größten
gutbesseram besten
vielmehram meisten
gernlieberam liebsten

Learn the odd ones cold: gut → besser → am besten, viel → mehr → am meisten. These come up everywhere.

Comparing

Your turn — a comparative

2Write the comparative of groß (big) — it adds an umlaut.
Hint: groß → umlaut on the o → add -er.

Comparative or superlative?

Sort each form: comparative ("-er / more") or superlative ("am …-sten / most")?

Relative clauses ADVANCED

der / die / das = "who / which / that"

A relative clause adds detail about a noun. The relative pronoun looks like the article, matches its noun's gender, sits after a comma, and sends its verb to the end:

  • Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Lehrer. — The man who is standing there…
  • Das Buch, das ich lese, ist spannend. — The book that I'm reading…
  • Die Frau, die ich kenne, wohnt in Wien. — The woman whom I know…

Two rules: the pronoun agrees with its noun (der Mann, das Buch, die Frau) and the verb goes last — it's a subordinate clause.

Type it

Your turn — a relative pronoun

3Fill the gap: Der Mann, ___ dort steht, ist mein Lehrer. (relative pronoun for der Mann, the subject.)
Hint: it matches der Mann (masculine subject) — same shape as the article.
"in order to"

um … zu + infinitive

To say "in order to (do)", wrap the clause in umzu + infinitive at the end:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten. — … in order to work in Germany.
  • Ich spare Geld, um ein Auto zu kaufen. — … in order to buy a car.

The infinitive goes last with zu in front of it. This is a neat, high-value way to give reasons and aims.
