The passive
The passive shifts focus from the doer to the action or its receiver. German's main passive uses werden + past participle across all tenses, marks the agent with von or durch, and contrasts with the sein-passive of state — plus a set of handy alternatives.

werden-passive
The action passive across tenses
The Vorgangspassiv (action passive) is werden in the right tense + the past participle at the end:

Präsens
Das Haus wird gebaut.
Präteritum
Das Haus wurde gebaut.
Perfekt
Das Haus ist gebaut worden.
Plusquamperfekt
Das Haus war gebaut worden.

The agent
von + dative vs durch + accusative
To name who or what did it:
von + dative — a person/agent: Das Haus wird von einem Architekten gebaut.
durch + accusative — a means/cause: Die Stadt wurde durch das Feuer zerstört.

sein-passive
Zustandspassiv — the state, not the action
The sein-passive describes a resulting state, while the werden-passive describes the action happening:
Das Fenster wird geöffnet. — action: it is being opened.
Das Fenster ist geöffnet. — state: it is (now) open.
Der Laden ist geschlossen. — state: the shop is closed.
Test: if you could add "already/now" and mean a finished condition, it is the sein-passive.

Alternatives
Passive without the passive
German often avoids a full passive with these near-equivalents:
man + active: Man baut das Haus. = "The house is being built."
sich lassen + infinitive: Das lässt sich machen. = "That can be done."
sein + zu + infinitive: Das ist leicht zu machen. = "That is easy to do / can easily be done."
Style tip:man is the simplest and most common way to sidestep a clunky passive in speech.

Hint: 'lassen' changes a → ä in the es-form.

Hint: a person (the boss) is the agent → von + dative.
Type it
Your turn — a full sentence
5Translate "The house is being built" into German (present passive of bauen).
Hint: 'wird' second, participle 'gebaut' at the end.
