Urban Environments
This mini-lesson walks you through the whole of the Edexcel 4GE1 Urban Environments unit: how urbanisation is changing the world, why people move to cities, the rise of megacities, how urban land use is arranged, the problems of rapid growth, and how planners build more sustainable cities.

6.1 · Defining urbanisation
What "urbanisation" means
Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities rather than in the countryside. In 2007 the world passed a milestone — for the first time, more than half of all people lived in urban areas.
An urban area is a built-up town or city; a rural area is countryside.
Urbanisation happens through rural–urban migration (people moving in) and natural increase (more births than deaths in the city).
Key idea: urbanisation is about the share of people who are urban, not just the total number. A country can be highly urbanised even if its cities are not the biggest in the world.
6.1 · Global trends
Where urbanisation is fastest now
Rates of urbanisation are very different in richer and poorer parts of the world:
Developed countries (e.g. the UK, USA, Japan) urbanised early, during the Industrial Revolution. They are already highly urban (often 80%+), so today they grow slowly.
Developing & emerging countries (e.g. Nigeria, India, Brazil) are urbanising rapidly right now — this is where the fastest growth is happening.
Developed nations are near the top and flat; developing nations are climbing steeply.
Common mistake: people think Europe and North America are urbanising fastest. In fact their rates are now low — the fastest urbanisation today is in Africa and Asia.

6.1 · Causes
Why people move: push & pull
Most rapid urban growth comes from rural–urban migration — people leaving the countryside for the city. Their reasons split into two sets:
Push factors drive people away from the countryside; pull factors attract them to the city.
Watch out: migration is not the only cause. Natural increase — young migrants having children in the city, where birth rates stay high — keeps cities growing even after migration slows.

6.1 · Megacities & world cities
Megacities and world cities
A megacity is a city with a population of 10 million or more people. In 1975 there were only a few; today there are 30+, and most new ones are in developing and emerging countries.
A world city (or global city) has worldwide influence — a hub for finance, trade, culture and decision-making, e.g. London, New York, Tokyo.

6.1 · Land use
What shapes urban land use
Different parts of a city are used for different things. Three factors decide who ends up where:
Accessibility — the centre is easiest to reach, so shops and offices cluster there.
Land value — central land is scarce and expensive, so it is used intensively (high-rise). Land gets cheaper towards the edge.
Locational needs — factories want cheaper, flatter land and transport links; housing wants space and quiet.
Key idea: the bid-rent effect — activities that can afford the most (offices, shops) outbid others for the accessible, high-value centre.
6.1 · Urban structure
The Burgess concentric model
The Burgess model describes a city as a set of rings growing outwards from the centre. Buildings get newer and lower-density towards the edge.
Centre out: CBD (Central Business District) → inner city (old terraced housing/industry) → suburbs → rural–urban fringe.
Remember the zones: the CBD is the shops-and-offices core; the inner city is older, denser housing near the centre; suburbs are newer, lower-density housing; the fringe is the countryside edge.

6.2 · Challenges
Problems of rapid urban growth
When cities grow faster than housing, jobs and services can be provided, serious problems appear — especially in developing-country cities:
Squatter settlements (slums / shanty towns) — self-built homes on land people don't own, often lacking clean water, sewers and electricity.
Informal economy — unregulated, insecure jobs (street selling, waste-picking) with no contract or tax.
Under-provision of services — not enough schools, clinics, clean water or waste collection.
Traffic congestion and air & water pollution from too many vehicles and untreated waste.
Watch out: a squatter settlement is not the same as planned housing. It is built informally, without permission or proper infrastructure — that's exactly why services are missing.

6.2 · Developed-city challenges
Challenges in developed-world cities
Rich cities face problems too, though they are often different in kind:
Inner-city decline — older industrial areas lose factories and jobs (de-industrialisation).
Urban sprawl — the city spreads onto the countryside at the rural–urban fringe.
Traffic congestion & air pollution from commuting.
Housing shortages and high prices; inequality between rich and poor districts.
Contrast: developing-city problems centre on rapid growth outpacing services (slums, informal work); developed-city problems centre on decline, sprawl and cost.
6.3 · Management
Building a sustainable city
A sustainable city meets the needs of people today without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Planners aim to cut resource use, waste and pollution:
Sustainable-city features: clean transport, renewable energy, recycling, green space, cycling and affordable homes.
Reduce car use — invest in buses, trams, cycle lanes and congestion charges.
Manage waste & water — recycling schemes and clean water for all.
Upgrade slums — "site-and-service" schemes give residents legal land, water and sanitation instead of demolishing homes.

Case study · developing country
Mumbai & Dharavi, India
Mumbai (India) is a fast-growing megacity of around 20 million people and India's financial capital. Rapid rural–urban migration has driven huge growth.
Dharavi is one of Asia's largest squatter settlements (slums) — roughly 1 million people packed into about 2 km².
It has a huge informal economy — recycling, pottery, leather and textiles — turning over hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
Problems: overcrowding, poor sanitation, shared toilets, and limited clean water.
Management: slum-upgrading and redevelopment schemes aim to add water, sanitation and better housing.
Use it as evidence: Dharavi shows rapid urbanisation producing a slum and a thriving informal economy at the same time.

London, United Kingdom
London (UK) is a world city of around 9 million people — a global hub for finance, government, culture and transport.
Challenges: traffic congestion, air pollution, high house prices, and inequality between wealthy and deprived boroughs.
Management & sustainability: the Congestion Charge (2003) and Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) cut traffic and pollution.
Cleaner transport — the Underground, buses, cycle "superhighways" and hire bikes reduce car use.
Regeneration — schemes such as the 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford renewed run-down inner-city land.
Compare the two: Mumbai battles slums and informal work from rapid growth; London tackles congestion, pollution and cost — the classic developing-vs-developed contrast the exam wants.

6.1 · Later stages
What happens after urbanisation
Once a country is highly urban, movement can reverse or spread out:
Suburbanisation — people move from the crowded inner city to lower-density suburbs on the edge, often as car use and rail links grow.
Counter-urbanisation — people move out of the city entirely to towns and villages in the countryside, seeking space and a quieter life (common in developed countries).
Re-urbanisation — later, regeneration draws people back into renewed inner-city areas.
Direction check: urbanisation and suburbanisation still add to the urban share; counter-urbanisation moves people the other way, back to rural areas.
