This mini-lesson covers the core of Cambridge IGCSE Paper 2 β Geographical Skills: reading maps with grid references, direction and scale, understanding relief with contours, spotting patterns of settlement and drainage, and choosing and reading the right graphs.

Maps are covered by a numbered grid. The vertical lines are eastings (numbered west to east) and the horizontal lines are northings (numbered south to north). Always read eastings first, then northings β "along the corridor, then up the stairs".
To find the point 463654:
Step by step
1. Eastings first: line 46, then 3 tenths further east β 463.
2. Northings next: line 65, then 4 tenths up β 654.
3. The point sits three-tenths across and four-tenths up inside square 4665.
Direction can be given with the compass or as a bearing:
Tap a compass direction on the left, then its matching bearing on the right.
Scale tells you how map distance relates to real distance. A representative fraction (RF) like 1:50 000 means 1 unit on the map equals 50 000 of the same units on the ground.
Measure a distance in cm (using the scale line for bends), then convert with the RF.
Contours are lines joining points of equal height. Their spacing shows the shape of the land (relief):
A cross-section is a side-on slice of the land drawn by plotting each contour's height along a line.
Examiners ask you to describe patterns of relief, drainage and settlement:

Different data suits different graphs:
Grid refs: eastings first, then northings; four-figure = square, six-figure = point (e.g. 463654)
Direction: 16-point compass; bearings measured clockwise from grid north (E=090Β°, S=180Β°, W=270Β°)
Scale: RF 1:50 000 β 1 cm = 0.5 km; 1:25 000 β 1 cm = 250 m; use the scale line for bends
Relief: close contours = steep, wide = gentle; cross-sections show the land side-on
Patterns: settlement (dispersed Β· nucleated Β· linear), drainage, communications
Graphs: line, bar, pie, scatter (best-fit), choropleth, isoline, kite, triangular, pyramid; mean & percentages
