Geographical Applications

This mini-lesson walks you through the AQA Geographical Applications unit — Paper 3. It has two halves: Issue Evaluation (based on a pre-release resources booklet) and Fieldwork (based on your own enquiries). You'll learn how to weigh evidence and make a decision, and the six stages of the geographical enquiry process.

Paper 3 overview

The synoptic paper

Paper 3 — Geographical Applications — is described as synoptic: it asks you to draw together knowledge and skills from across the whole GCSE course. It has two sections:

  • Section A — Issue Evaluation: answered using a pre-release resources booklet that AQA issues to schools 12 weeks before the exam, so you can study it in advance.
  • Section B — Fieldwork: answered using your own two fieldwork enquiries (one physical, one human geography), following the geographical enquiry process.

Key idea: "synoptic" means the questions test how well you can apply and connect ideas from different topics — not just recall facts about one topic.

Issue Evaluation

The pre-release resources booklet

Section A is built around a resources booklet about a real geographical issue. You get it 12 weeks early so you can become familiar with the sources. A booklet typically contains a range of resources:

The booklet mixes maps, graphs, data tables and text, and sets out the viewpoints of different people and groups (stakeholders) affected by the issue.

Exam tip: in the exam you can't take your annotated copy in — you get a fresh, clean booklet. Studying it beforehand is about understanding the issue, not memorising annotations.

Issue Evaluation

How to work with the resources

Section A tests the skill of evaluating an issue — analysing evidence, weighing options and reaching a justified decision. Good technique:

  • Analyse & interpret a range of sources — read the maps, graphs, data and text carefully and pull out what they show.
  • Consider different viewpoints — think about how the issue affects different stakeholders, who may disagree with each other.
  • Weigh the evidence — compare the advantages and disadvantages of each possible option.
  • Reach a decision and justify it — choose an option, give clear reasons supported by the evidence, and consider alternatives and possible consequences.

Misconception: there is usually no single "right" answer in Issue Evaluation. Marks come from how well you justify your decision with evidence and reasoning — not from picking a particular option.

Fieldwork

Section B: your own fieldwork

Section B is about fieldwork — the geographical enquiry you carry out in the field. AQA requires two enquiries in contrasting environments: one in physical geography and one in human geography.

The exam asks about your own enquiries (using your titles and data) and uses unfamiliar fieldwork situations to test whether you understand the enquiry process in general.

Every enquiry follows the same six-stage cycle — the next screen shows it in full.

The geographical enquiry moves through six stages, in order:

Stage 1

Stage 1 — Suggesting a question

An enquiry starts with a suitable question or hypothesis, linked to geographical theory you already know.

  • Write a question you can actually test in the field, e.g. "Does the River Ex get wider and deeper downstream?" (linked to the Bradshaw model).
  • Identify appropriate sources of data — both primary (collected first-hand) and secondary (already published).
  • Consider the risks and carry out a risk assessment (e.g. slippery riverbanks, traffic, weather) and plan how to reduce them.

Key term — hypothesis: a statement you can test with data, e.g. "Pedestrian numbers are higher near the town centre." Your data will support it or reject it.

Primary data = you collect it yourself in the field. Secondary data = someone else collected it earlier (census, maps, weather records, published data).

Watch out: it's about who collected it, not the type. A map you draw of your data is primary; a published Ordnance Survey map is secondary.

Stage 2

Stage 2 — Selecting & recording data

Stage 2 is choosing methods of data collection, measuring and recording the data. Primary methods depend on the enquiry:

  • Rivers: measuring channel width, depth and velocity (e.g. with a float or flow meter).
  • Coasts: beach profiles, sediment size, evidence of longshore drift.
  • Urban / human: pedestrian counts, traffic counts, environmental quality surveys, questionnaires.

You should be able to explain why a method is appropriate — reliable, safe and suited to the question — and use secondary data alongside your primary data.

Sampling

Sampling: choosing where to collect

You can't measure everywhere, so you take a sample. Three common sampling methods:

Random random numbers, no pattern Systematic regular fixed intervals Stratified matches sub-groups
Random — sites chosen using random numbers, no pattern. Systematic — sampling at regular fixed intervals (e.g. every 10 m). Stratified — the sample reflects known sub-groups in the population.

Stage 3

Stage 3 — Processing & presenting data

Once collected, data must be processed and presented using a variety of appropriate techniques so patterns are easy to see:

  • Graphs & charts — bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, scatter graphs.
  • Maps — including GIS, and techniques like located (proportional) symbols, choropleth maps and flow lines.
  • Choosing the right technique for the data and being able to justify your choice (e.g. a line graph for a continuous downstream change).

Exam tip: you may be asked to complete or improve a graph, or to say why one presentation method is more suitable than another for a given set of data.

Stage 4

Stage 4 — Analysing & explaining

Analysis is making sense of the presented data. You should:

  • Describe the patterns and trends the data shows (use figures from your graphs and maps).
  • Use statistics where helpful — e.g. the mean, median, mode, range, or measures like interquartile range.
  • Make links and explain why the pattern occurs, using geographical theory.
  • Identify any anomalies — results that don't fit the pattern — and suggest why they happened.
Stage 5

Stage 5 — Drawing conclusions

A conclusion answers the original question or hypothesis, using the evidence from your data.

  • State clearly whether the evidence supports or rejects your hypothesis.
  • Refer back to specific results and to the geographical theory you started with.
  • Keep it evidence-based — a conclusion should follow from your data, not from opinion.

Misconception: a conclusion isn't a summary of what you did. It must directly answer the enquiry question and be backed by your evidence.

Stage 6

Stage 6 — Evaluation

The final stage is evaluation — reflecting honestly on how good the enquiry was:

  • How reliable and accurate were the data and methods?
  • What were the limitations and problems (e.g. a small sample, human error, weather on the day)?
  • What improvements would you make if you did it again?
  • What other data could extend the enquiry and make the conclusion more secure?

Key idea: evaluation is about reliability and limitations, not just saying "it went well." Suggesting realistic improvements shows real understanding.

Describe the steps of a geographical enquiry from the question through to the conclusion. Use the words hypothesis, data and present.
Model answer
  • First you suggest an enquiry question or hypothesis linked to geographical theory, and plan appropriate data sources and a risk assessment.
  • You then collect and record data (primary and secondary) using suitable methods and sampling, and present it using graphs, maps and GIS.
  • Next you analyse the data to describe patterns and anomalies, and finally draw an evidence-based conclusion that answers the original question.

Suggest two ways a student could improve a fieldwork enquiry, and explain why each would make the results more reliable.
Model answer
  • Collect a larger sample (more sites or more readings): a bigger sample reduces the effect of anomalies and makes the data more reliable and representative.
  • Repeat measurements and take an average: this reduces the impact of human error, so the results are more accurate.
  • Also valid: collect data at different times/days, or add secondary data to check the findings — each makes the conclusion more secure.
