Paper 2: Comparative Essay
Paper 2 is a single comparative essay written in 1 hour 45 minutes. You choose one of four general questions and answer it by comparing and contrasting two of the works you have studied — entirely from memory, with no texts in the room.
The questions are general — applicable to many works — so you must fit your chosen works to the question, not the reverse.
It is the assessment home of Intertextuality: connecting texts.
Worth 25% of the HL grade.
Work through each screen, answer the questions as you go and collect ⭐ stars. Any named work appears only as a swappable, illustrative example — the IB reading lists are chosen by your school and rotate, so this lesson teaches the skills and ideas, never a set text. Press Start when you are ready.
The question
Answer the question set
The single biggest Paper 2 failure is answering a prepared essay instead of the question on the paper.
Read all four questions; choose the one your two works genuinely fit.
Identify the question’s key term and define it in your own words — that definition frames the whole essay.
Bend your material to this question; never recite a rehearsed answer to a different one.

The classic error
?The most common way to lose marks on Paper 2 is to:
Structure
Integrate, do not sequence
Comparison must be integrated, not sequential.
Sequential (weak): everything about work one, then everything about work two — two essays glued together.
Integrated (strong): each paragraph built around a point of comparison, holding both works at once.
The structural test: if your paragraphs are titled by work rather than by idea, you are not comparing — you are describing in turn.
