OCR A-level English Literature (H472) ยท Unseen Prose Close Reading
Mini-Lesson
Unseen Prose Close Reading
In Component 02 you must analyse an unseen prose passage from your topic area under timed, closed-text conditions. This lesson teaches a reliable method for reading any unfamiliar passage — narrative voice, prose method and genre — and turning it into an argued analysis.
No content revision saves you here — only a trustworthy method for reading cold.
AO2 leads: you are judged on how you analyse prose method and relate it to your genre.
Genre awareness matters: read the passage as an example of the Gothic, dystopia, or whichever topic you study.
You have the passage printed in front of you, so quote exactly and never approximate. Press Start.
Method ยท the first five minutes
How to read an unseen passage
Under time pressure, follow a fixed order:
Establish the narrative voice and point of view first — first person, third-person limited, or omniscient?
Read the whole passage twice — once for what happens, once for how it is told.
Find the shift — a change of pace, tone or focus is where meaning concentrates.
Ask the big question: what is this passage doing to the reader — unsettling, seducing, estranging?
Only then annotate method that serves that answer.
Voice first. Almost every strong prose analysis begins by pinning down who is telling the story and how much they know.

Toolkit ยท narrative voice
Point of view and its powers
Narrative voice is the master-tool of prose analysis:
First person — intimate but limited and possibly unreliable.
Third-person limited — close to one character’s perception.
Omniscient — a god’s-eye narrator who can move between minds.
Free indirect discourse — narration that fuses the narrator’s voice with a character’s thought, so we hear both at once.
Focalization — Gérard Genette’s term distinguishing who sees from who speaks.
Reliability: ask what the narrator does not know, will not say, or wants you to believe — the gaps are where the analysis lives.
Quick check
Name the technique
?Narration slides from the narrator’s report into a character’s own unspoken phrasing without quotation marks, so the two voices blend. What is this called?

Syntax, diction and image
Beyond voice, analyse the texture of the prose:
Syntax — long subordinated sentences delay and build; short ones snap and shock. Sentence rhythm enacts feeling.
Diction and register — the level and connotation of word choice; euphemism, the vernacular, the clinical.
Imagery and symbol — metaphor and the loaded material detail.
Structure of the extract — how it opens, turns and ends.
Convert, always: feature → effect → meaning. If you cannot say what a feature does here, do not mention it.
Quick check
Whose term is focalization?
?The distinction between who sees a scene and who speaks it is captured by the term “focalization”, from which theorist?
Pitfall ยท feature-spotting
Why naming devices earns nothing
The biggest trap is feature-spotting: listing techniques without saying what they do.
Weak: “The writer uses a metaphor, a long sentence and some alliteration.”
Strong: “The single sentence runs on for half the paragraph without a full stop, so the reader, like the character, is given no place to pause and no way out.”
Three features fully analysed beat ten features merely named.
AO2 is interpretation, not inventory.

Method ยท relating to genre
Reading the passage as its topic
Component 02 asks you to read the unseen passage through your topic area:
Identify the genre markers — Gothic dread, dystopian control, the framing of a woman, the American mode.
Show how the prose creates them — not that it is Gothic, but how its syntax and imagery build the Gothic effect.
Consider the typical and the surprising — where the passage fulfils and where it complicates the convention.
Genre plus method: the best unseen answers read the passage as a specimen of the topic, using the genre’s conventions as analytical tools rather than labels.
Quick check
Genre awareness
?Which unseen response best combines close reading with genre awareness?
AO1 ยท under the clock
Writing an argued analysis fast
Time discipline decides unseen marks:
Thesis first — state what the passage is doing and how its telling achieves it.
Embed exact quotation — short, precise, woven into the sentence; you have the text, so never approximate.
One clear idea per paragraph, each converting method to meaning.
Reach the end of the passage — do not run out of time before its final, often decisive, lines.
Golden rule: a controlled argument built on voice and three well-analysed features beats an exhaustive but unfocused commentary every time.
Quick check
Best use of time
?A candidate has analysed the opening of an unseen passage in great detail but has not reached its ending, and time is short. What should they do?
