AQA A-level English Literature B (7717) ยท Paper 2 Texts and genres ยท Section A unseen passage
Mini-Lesson
Unseen passage analysis
Paper 2 opens with a compulsory question on an unseen passage (25 marks) โ whichever option you sit. You cannot revise the text, so you must revise the method. This mini-lesson builds a procedure that works on any passage, in any genre, under exam conditions.
What is assessed: how the unseen passage presents an element or aspect of your genre โ crime writing, or political and social protest writing.
The trap: candidates describe the passage instead of analysing it, and forget to connect it to the genre at all.
The fix: a fixed sequence โ triage, thesis, four analytical moves, genre landing. Practise the sequence until it is automatic.
Work through each screen, answer the questions as you go and collect โญ stars. Named texts appear only as swappable exemplars โ the skills are what the exam rewards, and set-text lists change. Press Start when you are ready.
Step 0
Before you read: know what you are being asked
The unseen question is not generic close reading. It always asks how the passage presents an aspect of the genre you have studied. That single fact should organise everything.
Read the question first, then the passage. If the question directs you to (for example) how the passage presents the criminal, or the exercise of power, you must read the passage hunting for that, not reading it neutrally and hoping to double back with fifteen minutes left.
All five AOs are live in an unseen answer, but the weight sits on AO2 (methods) with strong AO1 (argument, terminology, expression), supported by AO3 (what the passage implies about its context) and AO5 (alternative ways of reading it).
AO4 is not required in Section A โ you are not comparing. Do not import your set texts. Every sentence should be about the passage in front of you.
Quick check
The commonest unseen error
?A candidate spends the first page of the unseen answer explaining how the passage reminds them of the novel they studied. Why does this cost marks?
Step 1
Triage: two minutes that decide your grade
Before annotating a single line, answer four questions in the margin:
What kind of text is this? Prose fiction, drama, poetry, memoir? First-person or third? Past or present tense? Contemporary or historical in feel?
Who is speaking, and what can they not see? The narrator's limits are usually the passage's method.
Where does the power / the crime / the transgression sit? Find the genre in the passage before you find the devices.
What does the passage do to me? Suspense? Complicity? Disgust? Pity that curdles into anger? Name the effect first; the evidence for it will then be obvious.
Annotate for structure, not just for words. Bracket the passage into two or three movements and note what changes between them. Almost every unseen extract turns somewhere โ an interruption, a shift of tense, a change of who is looking at whom. Find the turn.
Quick check
Finding the turn
?Halfway through an unseen extract the narration shifts from past tense to present tense. Which analysis is strongest?
Step 2
The thesis sentence
Do not open with a summary. Open with a reading โ a single arguable sentence that the rest of the answer proves.
passage + genre + effect on readerthe three ingredients of a usable unseen thesis
Weak (describes):This passage is about a woman waiting in a house while a man approaches.
Strong (argues):The passage generates its dread not by concealing the threat but by revealing it exclusively to the reader, so that we are made the only witness to a violence we cannot prevent โ a complicity that is the genre's oldest and most uncomfortable pleasure.
The examiner reads the first two lines and forms a judgement. AO1 rewards a coherent, conceptual argument, so put your intelligence in the opening sentence, not in the conclusion where nobody has the energy to find it.
Quick check
Thesis or summary?
?Which opening sentence is a thesis rather than a summary?
Sort it
Sort the analytical move
Tap an observation, then tap what kind of analytical move it is.
๐ฃ๏ธ Voice & perspective
๐๏ธ Structure & pacing
๐จ Lexis & imagery
Step 3
The four moves
Four analytical paragraphs, in this order, will cover any passage:
Voice and perspective โ who narrates, with what knowledge, and with what interest in being believed? Focalisation, free indirect style, unreliability, address to the reader.
Structure and pacing โ the turn; withholding and delay; sentence length as tempo; where the paragraph breaks fall; what is placed at the very end and why.
Setting, atmosphere and the symbolic field โ place doing ideological work. The city, the house, the institution, the weather.
Lexis, imagery and register โ semantic fields; the collision of registers; euphemism; what the passage refuses to name.
Every paragraph ends in the genre. Method โ effect โ aspect of the genre. If a paragraph does not reach the third step, it is a language exercise, not an A-level answer.
Quotation discipline: quote short and quote exactly from the passage in front of you. Embed quotations in your own sentence. Never quote from memory in an unseen โ you have the text, so use it.
Quick check
Method into meaning
?Which paragraph-ending completes the analytical chain the examiner is looking for?
Match it
Match the technique to its effect
Tap a technique on the left, then the effect it produces.
Technique in the passage
Effect on the reader
AO3 in an unseen
Inferring context safely
You may not know who wrote the passage or when. That is fine. What is not fine is inventing.
Infer from the evidence: the passage's assumptions about servants, money, marriage, the law or the police tell you a great deal about the social world it takes for granted.
Hedge honestly:the passage appears to assume a readership for whom X is unremarkable, which suggests... Tentative inference is rewarded. False certainty is punished.
Never manufacture facts. Do not name a movement, a date or an author you are not sure of. An examiner cannot credit a claim they know to be untrue.
Reception is available to you even when production is not. You can always ask how a passage lands on a modern reader, and how differently it may have landed on its first one.
The safest high-value AO3 sentence:What a text finds it unnecessary to explain is the surest evidence of what its first readers took for granted.
Quick check
AO3 without a date
?The unseen passage is unattributed. Which AO3 move is legitimate?
AO5 in an unseen
Alternative readings under time pressure
AO5 in an unseen does not require critics by name. It requires you to show that the passage can be read more than one way, and to adjudicate.
Two reliable manoeuvres:
The lens sentence. One sentence, deployed where it genuinely bites: A feminist reading would note that the passage grants the murderer a mind and the victim only a body. Then get back to the text.
The counter-reading. Concede an alternative and then defeat it: The passage can be read as sympathetic to the labourer โ but its sympathy is entirely mediated by an observer who never speaks to him, and pity offered from that distance is a way of keeping it.
The single highest-value habit in unseen work: the word although. An argument that can turn on itself and survive is what separates a Band 4 answer from a Band 5 one.
Exam craft
Handling ambiguity
?The unseen extract can plausibly be read as both condemning and enjoying the violence it depicts. What should a top-band candidate do?
Timing
The clock, honestly
Paper 2 carries three sections of 25 marks each. Whatever the total time, the unseen is worth exactly one third and should take roughly one third. Candidates routinely over-invest here because it comes first and feels frightening.
A workable split within your unseen hour:
~10 minutes reading, triage, annotation, thesis.
~40 minutes writing: introduction with thesis, four analytical paragraphs, a conclusion that lands the genre claim.
~5 minutes checking expression โ AO1 credits accurate, coherent writing, and it is the cheapest mark on the paper to lose.
If you run short: abandon a paragraph, not the conclusion. An answer that arrives somewhere is worth more than one that stops mid-analysis with the argument unresolved.
Exam craft
Priorities
?With ten minutes left, you have written three strong analytical paragraphs and planned a fourth. What is the best use of the time?
Recap
The big ideas to take into the exam
What it is: Paper 2, Section A โ one compulsory question on an unseen passage, 25 marks, in either option
Weighting: AO2 and AO1 dominate; AO3 and AO5 support; AO4 is NOT assessed โ do not import your set texts
Triage: kind of text ยท who narrates and what they cannot see ยท where the genre sits ยท what the passage does to the reader ยท FIND THE TURN
Thesis: passage + genre + effect on the reader, in one arguable sentence, in the first two lines
Four moves: voice and perspective โ structure and pacing โ setting and symbol โ lexis, imagery and register
Every paragraph: method โ effect โ aspect of the genre. Stop at the second step and you have written a language exercise
AO3: infer from what the passage takes for granted; hedge honestly; never invent an author or a date
AO5: one lens sentence, one counter-reading; learn to use the word ALTHOUGH and survive it
The unseen is the most revisable question on the paper โ because what you revise is a procedure. Press Finish to see your score.
