Scales of production
The right scale depends on quantity, variety and cost:
One-off / bespoke โ a single item made to order (a tailored suit, a bridge). High skill, high unit cost.
Batch โ a set quantity, then the line is changed for a different product (a bakery bread run, a print run).
Mass โ very large numbers of identical items on a flow line (drinks cans, fasteners).
Continuous โ non-stop 24/7 production of the same thing (steel strip, chemicals, paper).
As volume rises, tooling investment rises but the unit cost falls, because fixed costs spread over more items.

JIT & lean
Just-in-time and lean manufacturing
Modern industry works to cut waste:
Just-in-time (JIT) โ materials arrive exactly when needed, so little stock is held. This frees cash and space, but a supply hiccup can halt the line.
Lean manufacturing โ systematically removes the seven wastes (overproduction, waiting, transport, over-processing, inventory, motion, defects), often using Kanban pull signals.
Trade-off: JIT is efficient but leaves little buffer, so it depends on reliable suppliers and quality.

Standardisation
Standardisation and standard components
Consistency is designed in:
Standardisation โ making parts and processes to agreed sizes/specs so they are interchangeable.
Standard components โ bought-in parts (screws, bearings, resistors) made to standards, which cut cost, ease assembly and simplify repair.
Division of labour โ splitting assembly into simple repeated tasks raises speed and consistency.
